Up soars at the box office

Pixar’s animated “Up" — distributed by Disney — soared to the top of the weekend box office, raking in $68.1 million, final figures released today show.

Last week’s leader, “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian,” dropped to second place, earning $24.3 million from Friday to Sunday and boosting its domestic take in two weeks to $104.1 million, according to Hollywood.com Box-Office.

“Terminator Salvation” ($16.4 million) was third, followed by the opening of “Drag Me to Hell” ($15.8 million) and “Star Trek,” which took in $12.6 million to pass the $200 million mark in its fourth week in release.

Rounding out the top 10 were “Angels & Demons” ($11.3 million), “Dance Flick” ($4.7 million), “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” ($3.8 million), “Ghost of Girlfriends Past” ($1.9 million) and “Obsessed” ($657,000).

The dozen top-grossing movies earned a combined $161 million over the weekend, down 1.82 percent from the $163.9 million generated by the 12 top movies during the same period a year earlier.
