It may not be for rock purists, but as of Monday video game fans have been able to strum along to the rock genius that is Jimi Hendrix on the new edition of Guitar Hero 5.

However, for just a fifth of what the game costs, Hendrix tribute artist Anthony Aquarius will take the stage Saturday night at the Viper Room. Fronting the Anthony Aquarius Mystery Band, the Youngstown, Ohio native, who has been impersonating his rock idol for decades, will be perform a short set of Hendrix classics.

The gig comes as Aquarius, who likes to keep his age and much else a mystery, marks a year under a professional management contract that has increased his visibility. It is also hot on the heels of his appearance as Hendrix’s ghost in sold-out runs of the play “What Would Jimi Do?”

Originally staged at the Lex Theater in Hollywood — and performed Sunday night at the Stage 52 Theater in South L.A. — the play was written and directed by “Soul Food: The Series” creator Felicia Henderson. It centered on a successful but angst-ridden television writer, played by “Girlfriends” star Tracee Ellis Ross, who believes that all life’s riddles can be answered in the poetry of Hendrix songs.

“Deep down this tiny voice talks to you,” said Aquarius, waxing enigmatic during a jam rehearsal session for his upcoming gig. “You don’t know why you know what you know, but as long as you follow it, it leads you right where you’re supposed to be at the precise moment.”
