(CNN) -- Troubled rapper DMX is back behind bars in Arizona for violating his probation.

Earl Simmons, 39, who goes by the stage name DMX, was arrested Thursday on one count of violating his probation, according to the Maricopa County sheriff's office.

The rapper was allegedly using drugs, including cocaine and OxyContin, the latter without a prescription, CNN television affiliate KTVK reported.

Simmons burst on the rap scene in the late 1990s with songs like "Party Up" and "Get At Me Dog" as his first five albums debuted at number one on the Billboard charts. He is also an actor, and has appeared in numerous movies including "Belly."

But in recent years, Simmons has had numerous run-ins with the law.

Before his most recent arrest, Maricopa County authorities said he was arrested on five separate occasions after August 2007. That included a May 2008 arrest on drug and animal cruelty charges, when Simmons attempted to barricade himself inside his Cave Creek home, sheriff's deputies said.

Simmons also ran into trouble while in prison, being placed on "lockdown status" and forced to eat only bread and water for "jailhouse infractions." He later threw a food tray in anger at a corrections officer in February 2009, according to the sheriff's office.

His next court date is Wednesday, according to the Maricopa County superior court's website.

As a well-known evangelist who travels the nation spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ, it might not come as a great surprise that Beverly Broadus has tried to use her influence to change lives for the better.

In fact, Broadus is a 47-year member of her local Baptist church.

But at an age when most people are slowing down she has embarked on a fledgling career in the music industry.

This gives her something in common with her more famous son, Calvin Broadus — also known as Snoop Dogg.

The 59-year-old Broadus has signed on to co-manage a North Carolina based Christian rapper named Lawrence Riddles.

Riddles, 35, who was discovered after winning a talent showcase, has a promotional 5-track CD entitled “More than Music,” which chronicles his journey as a former drug dealer who lost one parent to addiction before he was saved.

“I’m co-managing Lawrence with a [manager] called Jake Bellamy, who got in touch with me to ask if I would consider it,” said Broadus.

“He sent me the information and the CD and I fell in love with it. This will appeal to a lot of people, especially round my son’s age in the 30s and 40s — even 20’s.

“When they hear it, it’s gonna blow their minds because this young man is talking about the street world of selling drugs — doing this, doing that. He lost his mom and then a few months later he lost his dad and there was just a whole bunch of stuff going on.”

She added' “But he found the strength to turn his life around because he wanted to be connected to the Lord and that’s what really got me.”

And another thing Broadus truly believes is that Riddles’ transformation is a precursor to what God has in store for her son, who was began his musical career as a singer and pianist at Golgotha Trinity Baptist Church in Long Beach.

“Yes, I truly believe that because it’s already been predicted,” she said. “God has already ordained him to preach the word … he will be a preacher. I told him that to his face.

“I see that God is turning him around' he’s totally different to when he first started. His children are growing up now, so he has to let go some of that profanity he’s been using. I prayed for him and God will show favor and make him a preacher. He will continue to rap, but it will just be changed to gospel.”

Broadus, who signed on with Riddles three months ago, continues her ministry talking to youth groups, domestic violence victims and when she’s invited, preaching to her Wednesday bible class at Golgotha.

In fact, it was during a Wave photo shoot last month that they first met face-to-face.

“We’d talked on the phone, but because of my commitments, we hadn’t been able to get together,” Broadus said.

“I’m praying that once Lawrence’s songs hit the airwaves, they will reach out and touch a lot of young men and women; those that are lost, those who are out in the streets and don’t know where to go.

“He’s telling a story about how he was out there and he called on the name of Jesus and how the Lord changed him and made him who is today.”

Meanwhile, Riddles was just as excited to meet Broadus and looked forward to one day meeting Snoop.

“Don’t get me wrong — I haven’t been saved all my life,” he said. “I love Snoop from when he first came out and all the way through his career. It would be an honor to meet him.

“I want to be a real role model and put it all on the line. When our youth hear some of these songs and want to emulate [the lifestyle] they have to understand they will face repercussions, whereas the rappers will go on living their lives.”

As for that meeting between the prolific rapper and new Christian rap artist, it may be some way off.

“I haven’t seen my son this year,” Broadus said. “We’re both traveling and came close; I was in Chicago and he’d just left. Then I was in Seattle one week and he was there another week.

“But we talk on the phone and text and as long as I know he’s doing okay I’m fine with that.”

HOLLYWOOD — Grammy-winning and chart-topping singer Christina Aguilera received the 2,423rd star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Monday, nine days before the release of her feature film debut, "Burlesque.''

"As a young girl in Pittsburgh, I often imagined what it would be like to come to Hollywood and make it as a performer,'' Aguilera told a throng of screaming fans who gathered for the late-morning ceremony in front of the Hard Rock Cafe on Hollywood Boulevard.

"We would go from audition to audition and I would sing anthem after anthem ... hoping one day it would all pay off. Standing here at this moment I know that it has paid off in spades.''

Irving Azoff, Aguilera's manager, recalled first meeting her in 2000 and being "instantly overwhelmed, not only by her obvious incredible gifts, but by her poise and her determination to reach her aspirations and her goals.''

"I've seen Christina's musical talents grow to include producing and song-writing and watched her mature into a strong woman and devoted mother,'' said Azoff.

"In addition to topping the music charts, she's a committed humanitarian, supporting philanthropic charities, human rights and world issues. As busy as she is, she cares most about you guys, her fans.''

Born Dec. 18, 1980, in Staten Island, N.Y., and raised outside of Pittsburgh, Aguilera first appeared on national television in 1990 as a contestant on "Star Search.''

As a youth, Aguilera sang the national anthem before Pittsburgh Pirates, Steelers and Penguins games, including during the 1992 Stanley Cup Finals.

Aguilera was a cast member of Disney Channel's "The All New Mickey Mouse Club,'' during the 1992-93 season, with castmates including Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake.

Aguilera's self-titled debut album was released Aug. 24, 1999, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard 200, with more than 8 million copies sold in the United States.

Aguilera's 2006 album "Back to Basics'' would also reach the top of the sales charts, along with four of her singles, "Genie in a Bottle,'' "What a Girl Wants'' "Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You)'' and "Lady Marmalade.''

Aguilera won the first of her four Grammys in 1999 as best new artist. She also won Grammys in 2001 for best pop collaboration with vocals for "Lady Marmalade,'' and for best female pop vocal performance in both 2003 and 2006 for "Beautiful'' and "Ain't No Other Man.''

In "Burlesque,'' Aguilera stars opposite Cher as a small-town girl who grew up in seven foster homes, who makes her way to a Los Angeles burlesque club to pursue her dreams. Aguilera also wrote and recorded four new songs for the musical's soundtrack.

(CNN) -- A Michael Jackson duet with Akon recorded in 2007 will be released Monday morning as the first official single from the late pop star's next album, Epic Records announced Friday.

"Michael," Jackson's first album of new music in nine years, also includes duets with rapper 50 Cent and rocker Lenny Kravitz, according to Epic. It will be released on December 14.

"Hold My Hand" featuring Akon was chosen to be the first single because the estate found a handwritten note from Jackson that indicated his desire that it be the first single on his next project, the company said.

The song is familiar to Jackson fans because an unfinished version of the song leaked onto the Internet in 2008, but Akon returned to the studio to complete a new version, Epic said.

"The world was not ready to hear 'Hold My Hand' when it leaked a couple years ago," Akon said. "We were devastated about it."

The song is now in "its final state," Akon said.

"It has become an incredible, beautiful, anthemic song," he said. "I'm so proud to have had the chance to work with Michael, one of my all-time idols."

The song will be unveiled on www.michaeljackson.com on Monday at 12'01 a.m. ET and then will be available for purchase by digital download, the company said.

The 10-track album will mostly include "songs that Michael worked on recently. There are also earlier compelling tracks," Epic said. It includes "Breaking News," a song streamed online last week as a preview.

While Epic did not list the producers involved, it did provide a track list for the album'

1. Hold My Hand (Duet with Akon)

2. Hollywood Tonight

3. Keep Your Head Up

4. (I Like) The Way You Love Me

5. Monster (Featuring 50 Cent)

6. Best Of Joy

7. Breaking News

8. (I Can't Make It) Another Day (Featuring Lenny Kravitz)

9. Behind The Mask

10. Much Too Soon

(CNN) -- Being a child star wasn't necessarily "Good Times" for Janet Jackson. The actress/singer tells the December issue of Health that being a young performer played a role in many of the body image issues she struggled with later in life.

"When I did 'Good Times,' they used to bind my chest because I was developing breasts at a young age," says 44-year-old Jackson, who played Penny Woods on the hit TV show from 1977-79. "It immediately makes you think, 'The way I am isn't good enough.' They thought I was too heavy and that I needed to lose weight. When I look back at the show, I was your average-size kid."

Still, it was around that same time that her mother, Katherine Jackson, took the 11-year-old for regular colonic treatments to help keep her trim.

"Once a month my mother would drive us to downtown L.A [for the procedure]," she explains. "That played a big part in my life and career, because I learned at a very young age what discipline truly meant, to be able to pass up the French fries and the piece of candy."

A former yo-yo dieter, Jackson is back in top form mentally, physically and careerwise, but admits that getting to that place hasn't been easy.

"People tend to put entertainers on pedestals. We're human beings, just like you," says the "For Colored Girls" star. "Whether we have money or not, we still have bills to pay, we still have our stresses."

(CNN) -- More than a year after his passing, Michael Jackson's parents and children appeared on Monday's episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show," sharing personal memories of the late pop star.

During the interview, Katherine Jackson spoke on topics ranging from her son's childhood to what she describes as the worst day of her life, his death on June 25, 2009.

In August, 2009, it was determined that Jackson died from an overdose of the powerful anesthetic propofol. Mrs. Jackson told Winfrey that she spoke to her son only once about drugs, which he denied using.

"He kept saying, 'My own mother don't believe me,'" Mrs. Jackson recalled. "I was telling him I didn't want to hear one day that he had overdosed because it would break my heart."

Dr. Conrad Murray, who was Jackson's personal physician, is headed back to court in January facing a charge of involuntary manslaughter in Jackson's death. When asked what she would like to say to Dr. Murray, Mrs. Jackson replied, "Why didn't he take care of my child? Why did he give that to him?"

As an adolescent, Mrs. Jackson said, Michael thought of himself as "ugly." "He would say, 'I'm just so ugly I don't want to go out there.' One day he just made up his mind ... he went down and got his nose done," she recalled.

Mrs. Jackson said she believes her son was addicted to plastic surgery, and was too embarrassed to admit the amount of surgeries he underwent. At one point, she said, Michael's nose looked "like a toothpick."

During the course of the interview, Joe Jackson weighed in on Michael's development as well.

"I never beat Michael like the media tried to say," he said. After Mrs. Jackson revealed that her husband disciplined the children using a strap, Joe Jackson told Winfrey that he doesn't regret his disciplinary style. "It kept them out of jail and raised them right," he said.

Michael's kids, meanwhile, reminisced about their favorite memories with their dad, such as the fact that he was a great cook.

"He tried to raise us without knowing who he was, but that didn't go too well," Paris explained to Winfrey. "He was just a normal dad, well, except for he was the best dad ever."

Since his passing, Mrs. Jackson said, "I think of my son all through the day, all the time. I think of the things he used to do when he was a little boy, the jokes he used to tell. I have a lot of good memories. That's one thing they can't take away from me."

More of her memories can be found in her book, entitled "Never Can Say Goodbye' The Katherine Jackson Story" filled with 150 pages of never-before-seen photos. Mrs. Jackson told Winfrey, "I wanted to do (the book) for his fans and for the people that misunderstood him."

WHITTIER — Retired Montebello Police Chief Garry Couso-Vasquez has embarked on a new career, and it isn't the kind of career one would normally expect for a career law enforcement official.

Couso-Vasquez, who also served on the Rio Hondo College Board of Trustees, is the drummer for the Flashback Cowboys, a group that bills itself as a southern rock band that is preparing to release its first CD of original music, 'Made in China.'

For Couso-Vasquez it's a path that began a long time ago.

'I first got interested in music while I was a student at Schurr Junior High School,' Couso-Vasquez said. 'I also played the drums in a band during my days at Montebello High School, but when I went into the Army in 1970, sadly that part of my life came to an end.'

Following his time in the service, Couso-Vasquez began a career in law enforcement which ended when a medical condition forced him to retire as Montebello police chief in 2008.

'After serving the public for over 37 years, nine years as Montebello's chief of police, I went back to playing the drums as a hobby and to keep me busy as I healed from several surgeries,' he said. "Luke Torres, Richard Acevedo and I began Flashback Cowboys in 2007, with Robbie Criscione joining the band in 2009.'

With songwriter and lead singer Torres on guitar and vocals, Criscione, also on guitar and handling backup vocals and Acevedo on bass, the group began to gain popularity and was booked at many local venues including Steve's BBQ and Blues Club, the Sage, Radisson Hotel and JT's Beach Club in Whittier, Original Mike's in Santa Ana, Draft Picks Sports Bar in La Mirada, DP's Pizza Pub in La Habra, Rudy's Baja Grill in Los Angeles, the Elks Club in Montebello, the Palms Hotel in the city of Industry, the Glendale Civic Auditorium and the Uptown Whittier Car Show, to name a few.

The band also donates its time at charitable events to help raise money and awareness for various causes.

'We have helped raise money for the Orange County Sheriff's {Department], Santa Ana Police and Latino Peace Officers Downed Officer Funds, for breast cancer and [multiple sclerosis] research and St. Bruno's Church in Whittier,' Couso-Vasquez said. 'We all feel good about raising funds for worthy events with our music.'

While the band and its following have enjoyed their cover renditions of many popular songs, the group wanted to develop its own sound prompting Torres to begin writing some original numbers for the band to play during their
performances.

On their upcoming CD release party Saturday at The Sage, 6511 Greenleaf Ave., Whittier, Couso-Vasquez said he is very excited.

'This is a dream come true,' he said. 'Music gave me a new lease on life and hopefully has enabled the band to make people happy through our music.

Doors open at 5 p.m., with the Flashback Cowboys taking the stage at 7. There is a cover charge of $20 per person which includes appetizers and a copy of the CD.

'The first half of the show will be music from the new CD and the second half will be cover versions of fan favorites,' Couso-Vasquez said.

He added the band is looking forward to their second CD of original music due out sometime next year and to playing venues in Las Vegas.

'I thank God and my family for giving me this chance and my fellow band members for the opportunity to be their drummer,' he said. "As police chief, I enjoyed helping others whenever I could. As a musician, I hope I am still making others feel good through music as we see people dancing and moving to our sound.'

(CNN) -- A California appeals court rejected the challenge by Michael Jackson's father of the two men named by the late pop star to run his estate.

The court ruled that since Joe Jackson was not named as a beneficiary in his son's will, he has no legal standing to object to John Branca and John McClain as executors.

Jackson accused Branca and McClain of misconduct, including fabricating the will in which Jackson named them as his executors.

Estate lawyer Howard Weitzman said he was "pleased, but not surprised" by the decision. "We hope this decision finally puts this issue to rest," Weitzman said.

Lawyer Brian Oxman, who represents Jackson, said he expects to appeal the ruling. "As a matter of law, I think that they're wrong," Oxman said.

Jackson filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Dr. Conrad Murray, the physician who was treating the pop star when he died on June 25, 2009. Oxman argued that this lawsuit makes the father an "interested party" in the estate as required by probate law.

The appeals court ruling suggested Jackson was late in making that claim as part of his estate challenge.

Michael Jackson's will places his entire estate in a trust that benefits only his mother, Katherine Jackson, his three children and unnamed charities.

Katherine Jackson dropped her probate challenge of the executors last November, just a day after Joe Jackson, her husband of 61 years, filed his challenge.

Oxman predicted the probate case will not be settled for years.

It’s been 15 months since NBA star and renowned jazz bassist Wayman Tisdale died after a battle with cancer, but his musical talent and joyous spirit live on in a posthumous release that relives the great funk era of the 1970s.

Entitled “The Fonk Record,” to be released Oct. 26 on the Mack Avenue Records imprint Rendevouz Music, the CD is an 11-track blast of horns, trumpets and virtuoso guitar play featuring the swaggering lyrics of Tisdale and special guests stars George Clinton, George Duke and Ollie Woodson.

The album was produced and arranged by Tisdale and Derek Allen, a notable name in the music industry who has worked with Lionel Richie, Bobby Brown and Janet Jackson.

And the six-foot-eight Tisdale takes a leaf out of the legendary Parliament-Funkadelic playbook creating his own moniker — as Tiz and the Fonkie Planetarians band.

The era of platforms, big afros and straight-up musicianship hits you straight out of the box with the first track, appropriately titled “The Introduction,” where Tisdale repeatedly jokes, “Where are my horns?” and then punks them for being too fat and only able to play for four minutes at a time.

“This album is a real throwback to the likes of [Earth Wind and Fire] and Parliament-Funkadelic,” Allen, who is based in Sacramento, said in a telephone interview. “Not to knock what’s out there now, but it was an era when people played real instruments.

“The project began 12 years ago when I and Wayman, who most people didn’t know was this absolute funk aficionado, would just jam together. Tracks just started to evolve and we’d record stuff separately. Then he started to come up with this funk persona and these different characters.”

Allen added' “Everything changed when he was diagnosed with cancer in 2007 and we started to send the music files to each other. Those close to him never thought he wouldn’t beat it. He was such a big, wonderful presence I thought he would live forever.

“But he must have had an inkling because when I listened to some of the tracks he sent his playing was the most intense I’ve ever heard it. I said to him, ‘Wayman, this is great but why are you playing so hard man?’”

Tisdale, the former University of Oklahoma legend who went on to play for the Indiana Pacers, Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns, contracted bone cancer in his knee. Despite two rounds of chemotherapy and having his foot amputated, he died in May 2009 at age 44.

Over 4,000 people attended his funeral and earlier that year his alma mater broke ground on the University of Oklahoma Wayman Tisdale Specialty Health Center in Tulsa.

Meanwhile, Allen recalled that Tisdale especially wanted Clinton, Duke and Woodson to be his Planetarians — the latter two were fairly easy to arrange but the legendary Parliament front man was a trip in itself.

“With George and Ollie’s jazz background, Wayman had played with them often enough and so it was just a phone call to get them into the studio,” said Allen.

“But with Clinton, he lived way out in Reno somewhere and so I had to drive out and find him, then find a studio and get him to do his thing. I told him he had to honor Wayman’s wishes.”

Now with the album complete, Allen revealed plans to launch the CD that will uniquely celebrate his friend’s legacy.

“There will be a live tour and I hooked up with these terrific animation artists who have visualized Wayman and the Fonketeer group and will project his image while we play,” said Allen. “It’s gonna be the coolest thing ever.”

(CNN) -- Rapper T.I. may learn his fate at an Atlanta, Georgia, court hearing Friday, days after he helped a suicidal man who wanted to jump off of a building.

T.I., whose real name is Clifford Harris, was arrested on drug charges in Los Angeles, California last month, triggering Friday's hearing, which could end with the revocation of the rapper's probation on an earlier federal weapons conviction.

In an interview with CNN's Don Lemon on Thursday, Harris said he could not talk about the facts of his case, but he did talk about his regrets.

"The only thing that I can say, man, is that all people who have supported me, who were behind me, who believed in me, who were disappointed and were let down, I just offered my sincerest apologies and I will dedicate my life no matter how long it takes to earn your trust back and to make you proud yet again," he said.

When Lemon asked the rapper if that meant he would "never again" get in trouble, he answered, "Absolutely."

"I'm tired, I'm wore out," he said. "I don't have the age, the energy, or just the attitude to move forward and continuing in this cycle in this ongoing process of destruction and disparity in my life. I've got too many depending on me and counting on me. I can't do it."

The recording artist made headlines Wednesday for his involvement in helping police persuade a man not to jump off the roof of a high-rise office building in Atlanta.

Harris talked to the man about how a person "can make it through anything," Atlanta Police spokesman James Polite said.

"T.I. just happened to be in the right place at the right time," Polite said.

Harris told Lemon that he went to the scene after he heard on the radio that a man was threatening to jump.

"I believe that I have been put here for a purpose, and I believe that I have an ability to reach people that most people can't reach, that I can turn lives around that other people, they can't have the same affect," he said. "I think that God placed me here for that purpose."

The man, who was not identified by police, was taken to Atlanta's Grady Memorial Hospital for a psychological evaluation, Polite said. He was not charged with a crime, he said.

Harris and his wife, "Tiny" Tameka Cottle, were arrested on drug charges during a traffic stop on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood, California, last month.

In 2008, Harris was sentenced on charges of unlawfully possessing firearms as a convicted felon. The charges came after an arrest by federal agents a year earlier while Harris was buying three machine guns in the parking lot of an Atlanta grocery store.

Harris was released after serving nine months in prison and three months in a halfway house.

(CNN) -- Soul singer Solomon Burke has died at the age of 70 in the Netherlands, his Dutch representative said Sunday.

Burke died of natural causes after arriving at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport, his family said in a statement posted on Burke's website. He was in town to perform for a sold-out show with the Dutch band De Dijk.

"This is a time of great sorrow for our entire family. We truly appreciate all of the support and well wishes from his friends and fans. Although our hearts and lives will never be the same, his love, life and music will continue to live within us forever," his family said.

Hailed by Atlantic Records producer Jerry Wexler as "the greatest soul singer of all time," Burke was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.

He joined the Atlantic Records stable in 1960, putting him in the company of Ray Charles, Ben E. King and Wilson Pickett.

His first hit with them came almost immediately, with "Cry to Me."

He had top R&B hits in 1965 with "Got to Get You Off of My Mind," and "Tonight's the Night," the rock museum says in Burke's biography.

He continued to tour until his death, and was scheduled to perform Tuesday in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Renowned drummer and percussionist Sheila E. electrified a crowd of hundreds Thursday night as part of the ongoing rejuvenation of the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza.

E, best known for her work with Prince, was the latest headline act to take part in the mall's free summer concert series following performances from the likes of Drake and Goapele.

Back in February, Chicago-based owners Capri Capital Partners announced a $30 million investment to upgrade the shopping center.

Meanwhile, resplendent in an all-white outfit, the Oakland-born entertainer made it a family affair as she took to the stage with her father, Pete Escovedo, and brothers Juan and Peter Michael, better known as the E Family.

Michael Jackson's mother on Wednesday sued the promoters of her late son's planned concert tour, saying they did not live up to a promises to provide him proper physical care and negligently hired Dr. Conrad Murray as his personal physician.

The Jackson family matriarch filed the suit against AEG Live in Los Angeles Superior Court on behalf of herself and her son's three children. She is seeking unspecified damages. The suit alleges AEG is responsible for the medical decisions made by Murray, who has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter in Jackson's death.

AEG spokesman Michael Roth said company officials had not seen the lawsuit and had no immediate comment.

The London concert tour was canceled after Jackson's June 25, 2009, death at age 50. The suit portrays the singer as being "confused, easily frightened, unable to remember, obsessive and disoriented'' in the months before his death.

"He was cold and shivering during the summer rehearsals for his show, and as shown in photographs of him, he uncharacteristically wore heavy clothing during the rehearsals, while other dancers wore scant clothing and were perspiring from the heat,'' the suit states.

Rather than cut back on the rehearsal schedule so that Jackson could recuperate, AEG "insisted that he attend every rehearsal in a grueling schedule, threatening that if he missed even one more they would cancel the tour ...,'' his mother alleges.

AEG, "so that it could reap staggering profits from the tour,'' instructed Jackson to stop taking medication and that he be treated only by Murray, according to the complaint.

One of Jackson's sons, Michael Jr., "witnessed his father suffering and accordingly has suffered great trauma and severe emotional distress,'' the suit says.

(CNN) -- On Sunday, December 5, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts will celebrate "five individuals who have spent their lives enriching, inspiring and elevating the cultural vibrancy of our nation and the world" as part of the 33rd annual Kennedy Center Honors gala.

Oprah Winfrey, whose daytime talk show will come to an end in 2011, is among the honorees, which also include country musician Merle Haggard; composer and lyricist Jerry Herman; dancer, choreographer and director Bill T. Jones; and legendary songwriter/musician Paul McCartney.

"For more than 25 years, Oprah Winfrey has established one of the most innovative careers in the entertainment world, with distinctive accomplishments in television and film," the Kennedy Center's Chairman David M. Rubenstein said in a statement.

"The honesty of Merle Haggard's music and poetic lyrics has helped to shape the world of country music for nearly five decades," and "Jerry Herman's musicals rank him in the pantheon of Broadway's Golden Age and will keep audiences humming along for generations to come," Rubenstein went on.

Bill Jones, Rubenstein added, has had "an invaluable impact on the varied landscapes of dance and theater," whereas "Sir Paul McCartney is one of the most influential and successful songwriters and musicians of all time, whose work has continuously altered both the creation and perception of music all over the world."

The annual gala will take place at the Kennedy Center Opera House, and President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama will be in attendance (they'll also receive the honorees at the White House before the event).
WEST HOLLYWOOD — Rapper-actor T.I., who co-stars in the current box office hit "Takers,'' and his wife were facing possible drug charges Thursday following their arrests on the Sunset Strip for alleged possession of a controlled substance.

The 29-year-old performer, whose real name is Clifford Harris, and Tameka Cottle, a 36-year-old singer, were booked on suspicion of felony possession of a controlled substance, with bail set at $10,000, according to the sheriff's department.

The couple were in a luxury car that was stopped by deputies in the 9200 block of Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood about 10'30 p.m. Wednesday, according to the sheriff's department.

They were released on bail about 4 a.m., and their next court appearance will be some time in November, said Nicole Nishida of the sheriff's department.

Deputies stopped the car for an alleged illegal U-turn, Nishida said. It was unclear who was driving, she said.

"And then, as they (deputies) stopped them and conducted their investigation, they smelled a marijuana substance emitting from the car,'' Nishida said. "And at that point, they conducted a narcotics investigation, and then they found pills to resemble ecstasy.''

The pills were being tested, she said.

(CNN) -- Kanye West is a new man.

So says the rapper who took to U-Stream on Friday to answer questions from fans. Speaking from somewhere in Korea, West appeared wearing the outfit he wore in the "Flashing Lights" video (which he told fans was his favorite).

After speaking about his love of art and how it helped influence the video for his new song "Power," ("I always had the dream of recreating the Sistene Chapel") West discussed his creative process and his admiration of James Cameron's "Avatar" and the late fashion designer Alexander McQueen, whose creativity he said he uses as his bar.

"When I make music, I'm not really thinking about other rappers album," West said. "I'm thinking about the McQueen collection."

The rapper became reflective when a viewer posted a comment referring to West as racist.

"I actually don't know a rapper before me that liked white people more than me," he said. "I don't know a rapper that collaborated with more white people."

"I know what I did that made people put it in a box, but it never came from a place of that," he continued. "I'm not going to dial into that but I will just say that in no way am I racist."

West also says he is not a raving egomaniac.

"What you have to realize is a lot of times when I talk and I am talking extremely cocky, I am not talking about myself," he said. "I am talking about the work. I think people should be proud of their work."

The rap star is now going for a kinder, gentler approach, he says.

"It's no more time to be a rude a** celebrity," West said. "It's now all about the work. I'm not allowing my attitude to get in the way of the work anymore."

(CNN) -- R&B power couple Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz have tied the knot, Keys' representatives confirmed to CNN on Sunday.

The two were married Saturday at a private residence overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.

Keys, 29, a 12-time Grammy-award winning singer, wore a Grecian-inspired, one-shoulder Vera Wang gown. Her groom, a DJ/producer/rapper, wore a tuxedo designed by Tom Ford that featured a white jacket and pale pink shirt.

The couple are expecting a child together.

Swizz Beatz and Keys have been friends for several years and worked together on one song for her current album, "The Element of Freedom."

(CNN) -- Janet Jackson says she has no regrets about her three decades in the spotlight as a singer and actress, but says show business is "just too difficult" for children.

"A kid should have a life. They should enjoy their childhood. They only get one," Jackson told HLN's Richelle Carey in an interview set to air Friday.

The 44-year-old Jackson and her late brother, Michael, had been in the public eye since childhood -- he as the lead singer of the Jackson Five, she as a performer on television shows like "Good Times" and "Diff'rent Strokes." The Grammy-winning performer has had numerous hit albums since her 1986 set, "Control." She is scheduled to perform on Friday at the opening of this year's Essence Music Festival.

Jackson has been singing since the 1980s and has continued acting, appearing in two Tyler Perry movies in the past year, but she said the pressures on child performers are too great.

"Maybe when they turn 18, if that's what they want to go into, then that's on them," she said.

Michael Jackson died in 2009 of an overdose of anesthetic used to help him sleep. His physician, Conrad Murray, has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter charges brought in connection with the death of the onetime "King of Pop."

Jackson said she was "really shocked" by the death of "Diff'rent Strokes" co-star Gary Coleman, who died in May at age 42. She said she hadn't spoken recently with either Coleman or fellow co-star Todd Bridges.

Coleman struggled with his finances, worked as a security guard for a time and was occasionally in the news for scuffles in his later years. He died after being stricken with a brain hemorrhage after an accident at his home in Santaquin, Utah, and his will is the subjecte of a dispute between his ex-wife, Shannon Price, and former business associate Anna Gray.

Pharrell Williams has had his thumb on the pulse of popular music since the early 1990s, but what the 37-year-old music and fashion icon really wants is to stay in close touch with the side of himself that will never grow up.

It was this confession, shared years ago with Universal Pictures music director Kathy Nelson, that led him to the set of the animated 'Despicable Me,' which opens this week and features a hip-hop-flavored score by the creative force behind the Neptunes production outfit and the progressive-minded rock duo N.E.R.D.

The story goes like this' After teaming up on two 'The Fast and the Furious' movies, Nelson casually told Williams that she was working with Jack Johnson on an animated 'Curious George' movie, for which the mellow rock singer would provide the score and compose original songs.

'I was so envious. I was honest about it,' Williams, who admits to eating breakfast cereal at 2 a.m. and watching cartoons during his leisure time, said in an interview this week at a conference room in West L.A. 'That is a big part of my personality.

'I was hurt. I was like, 'Why wouldn't you ask me? You ask me for hip-hop records but you don't ask me to do this,'' he added. 'I think everybody has the means to be diverse, but only some of us are adamant about it…We are Black, and yes we read Essence, Ebony and Jet magazines, but that does not stop us from picking up Rolling Stone or Time. I didn't feel typecast by not getting it, I was just saying, 'Don't you know enough about me? We are friends. I am a big, huge kid. I am the first person you should ask.''

Nelson saw the sincerity in his eyes and promised to reach out for her next animated project, which happened to be 'Despicable Me,' about a delightfully wicked character named Gru, who — armed with minions, shrink and freeze rays and battle-ready vehicles for land and air — tries to steal the moon.

Despite Williams' passion for the material and creative ideas, it was not an easy task. When producing for an artist, Williams said he works to identify what is missing in their body of work and finds ways to present them anew. For the movie, he had to get in sync with the emotional ups and downs of the characters, and use those feelings to convey the story through lyrics and music.

After writing and producing a song, Williams had to go back and watch clips of the film to see if his work matched the particular emotion at the time. If not, it was back to the studio.

Fortunately, Williams was not alone; he was given a team of veterans who helped guide his hand while providing him the freedom to explore. Part of that exploration' resisting the obvious temptation to write songs celebrating the main character's comic treachery.

'When you look at Gru, you understand that he is a guy that has issues,' said Williams. 'Personalities are weathered entities, if you will, that have been weathered by their environs, their parents, things that have happened to them. Basically, we are all walking molds. You can look at us and tell what we've been through and where we've come from, how it has affected us and how we are carrying it with us today. Gru was much like that. He was so mean but he also had a lot of fun. And I thought at first that he had this 'Grinch' type of feel but then you realized that the Grinch just did it to be dastardly. Gru did it because he thought it was the way, it was the way he was treated as a child…It was the way he saw his mother behave with him.'

Taking this into account, Williams took strides to incorporate those themes into his songs. But strangely, he found more inspiration driving on Los Angeles' congested roads.

'When you think of the crazy, crazy traffic that you guys have here in L.A., I can just see anyone getting out of their car with a rocket launcher,' said the Virginia Beach, Va. native. 'I can just totally understand that, and that's a guy having a bad day. I just thought of it from the perspective of someone sitting in traffic and that's where Gru's theme comes from — except he had a bad day every day.'

Despite this, the film provides an essential life lesson that is further complemented by the filmmakers' use of perspective. Rather than give the point of view of various supporting characters, said Williams, the film uses them to provide greater insight into Gru — exploring how he came to be so mischievous, and what it takes to reverse negative habits and behaviors.

'I realized that this was the best film for any bad child,' he said, 'because a bad kid can look at this and say 'I understand where he's coming from,' and then they begin to realize that there is some correlation between their behavior and things that happened when they were growing up.'

With this project completed, Williams is back in the studio with N.E.R.D, which is expected to release its fourth album this fall. And while he could not give exact details, he is currently working on two film projects that are in development' 'Super Freak' The Rick James Story' and 'Zoom.'

(CNN) -- In September 2008, Jennifer Hudson was on top of the world with a Grammy, a Golden Globe and a debut album under her belt, not to mention a handsome man in her life.

But less than a month later her world came crashing down with the shocking deaths of her mother, brother and 7-year-old nephew. The actress opened up about this tragic turning point in her life for the first time last night during her "Behind the Music" special on Vh1.

"It was all like a blur, it was surreal. It was like I was outside myself," Hudson said, adding that she spent two weeks straight inside of her room. "I was secluded from anything that was going on."

Hudson understandably had to take a step back from her blossoming career. When she was asked to do a film, she turned it down saying, "I have to adjust to who I am. I can't be another character."

It wasn't until the 2009 Grammys that Hudson felt ready to make a public appearance. Not only did she win the award for Best R&B Album, she accepted the award from her life-long idol, Whitney Houston. "I really cannot put into words how special that moment was for me," Hudson told VH1.

Now the still-healing Hudson is an adoring mother to her son, David Daniel Otunga Junior. "He makes me feel like the most special person," she said.

As she continues to push forward, Hudson said her lost family members still shine through in her life. "My brother drives me in my music, my son reminds me of my nephew, and being a mother reminds me of my mother."

(CNN) -- The title of the Black Eyed Peas' album "The E.N.D." just might apply to Fergie's career with the supergroup, if you believe rumors that surfaced over the weekend.

According to RadarOnline.com, female lead Stacy "Fergie" Ferguson has been repeatedly clashing with band member Will.I.Am over his inflated ego and will leave the group when it finishes its summer tour.

"She's got everything planned out and she says she can't be convinced to change her mind," a source reportedly told RadarOnline.com, adding that the singer also hopes to start a family with hubby Josh Duhamel.

But Will.I.Am insists that he and Fergie, both 35, are closer than peas in a pod. On Saturday he tweeted, "Don't belive [sic] gossip about fergie leaving the group (we are never breaking up) its all lies!!!"

(CNN) -- Michael Jackson's death instantly changed the lives of his family and friends. The weeks immediately after the pop icon died were chaotic, and many questions are still unanswered for those closest to Jackson.

The day their father died, Prince Michael, 13, Paris, 12, and Blanket, 8, moved in with their grandmother Katherine Jackson at the Encino, California, home where Michael once lived with his family.

The home is filled with memories of their father, including many photos of a young Michael Jackson. The theater room of the large house was converted into a classroom where they've been home-schooled for the past year.

The grassy yard of the Encino estate is often filled with Michael's kids playing ball with four cousins -- the sons of Jackson brothers Jermaine and Randy -- who have lived there the past year with their mother.

They share a computer with internet access, which resulted in fans getting a rare and candid look at Blanket's dancing, acting and light saber skills when several videos were uploaded to YouTube in April.

While Jackson kept his children shrouded in privacy during his life, they have appeared at a handful of public events to honor their father since his death.

Paris made the world cry at the end of a memorial for her father when she said, "Ever since I was born, daddy has been the best father you could ever imagine."

Paris and her older brother took the stage at the 2010 Grammy Awards to accept their father's lifetime achievement award.

"To all his songs, his message was simple, love," Prince Michael said. "We will continue to spread his message and help the world."

The three children traveled to Gary, Indiana, this week for their first visit to their father's first home. They will take part in a tribute there, along with Katherine Jackson and their grandfather Joe Jackson.

Katherine Jackson's main focus since her son's death has been caring for his three children. A Los Angeles judge immediately gave her temporary custody, which became permanent after Debbie Rowe, the mother of the two oldest children, agreed not to challenge her.

Michael's 80-year-old mother waged a legal fight for several months for control of Jackson's estate, but gave up her probate challenge in October. She and Jackson's children are the main beneficiaries of the estate. For now, they are receiving an $86,000 monthly family allowance.

Katherine Jackson and her husband have attended every hearing in the criminal case against Dr. Conrad Murray, the physician who is charged with involuntary manslaughter in their son's death.

She has only recently begun speaking publicly about her son's death, giving a handful of media interviews. Katherine Jackson also posted a YouTube video this month announcing her support for a tribute to Michael Jackson to be held June 26 in Beverly Hills, California.

Although Katherine and Joe Jackson have been married for 61 years, they do not usually share a home.

In the weeks after Michael Jackson's death, Joe Jackson -- his children call him Joseph -- denied allegations that he physically abused his son during his Jackson 5 days.

"Never. Never have. And I -- and I raised him just like you would raise your kids, you know? But harm Michael, for what? I have no reason. That's my son. I loved him and I still love him," Jackson told CNN's "Larry King Live" in August.

Joe Jackson has been outspoken and active in raising questions about his son's death. Jackson has called for a more serious charge than involuntary manslaughter against Murray.

He recently filed a complaint with the California Medical Board against AEG, the company that was producing the comeback concerts. The complaint accused AEG of neglecting to provide the recommended medical equipment and a nurse who was supposed to assist Dr. Murray. Those measures could have prevented the singer's death or revived Jackson when he stopped breathing, according to the complaint.

Michael's father also plans to file a wrongful death lawsuit against Murray on Friday, the anniversary of his son's death.

Jackson, not mentioned in his son's 2002 will, has an ongoing legal challenge against the men named as executors in the document. The probate judge has ruled against him, but it is under appeal.

While Jackson, 80, receives a monthly Social Security check, he depended on financial support from his son. That ended with his son's death. He petitioned the probate court to award him $15,000 a month in support, but the request is still pending.

Jackson, who lives in Las Vegas, Nevada, has been promoting his vision of a Jackson family museum and entertainment center in Gary, Indiana.

Michael Jackson's five brothers and three sisters have, at times, come together as a family since his death. But, as with many large families, they each follow their own paths.

Brothers Jackie, Jermaine, Tito and Marlon appeared together on an A&E Network reality show last fall that followed their attempt to record and perform again as a musical group. The series ended after six episodes with no new songs and no public performances. Brother Randy chose not to take part in the show.

Jermaine Jackson has been the most visible publicly, traveling around the world to promote his own projects and Michael Jackson's legacy. He recently performed a tribute concert to his brother in Gambia.

Sister Janet has stayed busy with her acting and music career, which included roles in two Tyler Perry movies in the past year.

La Toya Jackson has been outspoken in her belief that Michael Jackson was the victim of a criminal conspiracy to kill him. She has attended each of Murray's court hearings.

Rebbie Jackson, the oldest of the Jackson siblings, recently resumed her singing career. However, she has mostly remained out of the spotlight.

Debbie Rowe is a former nurse who married Michael Jackson in 1996, gave birth to his two oldest children and then agreed to a divorce settlement in 1999. Prince Michael and Paris remained with their father.

In the weeks after Jackson's death, Rowe considered a legal challenge for custody of the children. She finally reached an agreement with Katherine Jackson that would allow her supervised visits with the children under guidelines to be recommended by a child psychologist. It is unclear if the children know Rowe is their mother.

Murray lost his only patient when Jackson died a year ago. It was several months before Murray resumed his medical practices in Houston, Texas, and Las Vegas, Nevada.

He never got paid the $150,000 monthly salary he was owed for the two months he was Jackson's personal physician while the pop star rehearsed in Los Angeles for his comeback concerts, Murray's lawyer said.

Murray was charged with involuntary manslaughter in Jackson's death in February. The judge refused to suspend his California medical license, although Murray cannot personally administer anesthesia on patients. The maximum sentence if convicted is four years in prison.

His preliminary hearing, which is expected to last at least a week, could begin in late September. A trial could be held next year.

Dr. Arnold Klein, Jackson's dermatologist and longtime friend, was never criminally implicated in Jackson's death, although drug agents did subpoena medical records from his office.

Klein hinted in an interview that he may have been a sperm donor for Jackson's children. His lawyer unsuccessfully appeared at a probate hearing last summer to seek a role for Klein in the children's lives.

When Jackson died, he was nearly $500 million in debt, according to a source familiar with his estate who is not authorized to speak about financial matters. In the year since, the debt has been reduced to about $300 million, the source said. The remaining debt is "very manageable" considering the income flowing into the estate, the source said.

Sony Music, which recently signed a $250 million recording contact with Jackson's estate, said fans bought 31 million Jackson albums in the past year. Sony's film division also paid $60 million to produce the "This Is It" documentary that was a global blockbuster last year.

The estate also has a steady flow of cash from the rights to 250 Beatles songs that Jackson shares with Sony.

Merchandising rights, a Cirque du Soleil deal and a memorabilia tour have also brought in millions to the estate.

Jackson's estate is being administered by John Branca, an entertainment lawyer, and John McClain, a former music executive, who were named executors in the 2002 will. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff has not made a final ruling on who will have permanent control of the estate.

(CNN) -- Rapper Fat Joe has been "officially cleared" after Wisconsin police investigated an alleged sexual assault reported by a woman last weekend, according to his lawyer.

The 33-year-old Madison woman called police with a complaint of "inappropriate touching" after Fat Joe -- whose real name is Joseph Cartagena -- performed at the city's Orpheum Theater on Sunday night, a police report said.

The woman said the incident happened inside a limousine with Fat Joe and other male subjects, the police report said.

"Fat Joe had no contact with, and never spoke to his accuser," attorney Dawn Florio said in a statement Thursday night. "He was questioned for a few minutes at his hotel room and was never detained by the police."

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (CNN) -- A California judge is slated to hear arguments Monday on a motion to suspend Dr. Conrad Murray's medical license while he faces criminal charges in the death of Michael Jackson.

Meanwhile, patients at Murray's Houston, Texas, and Las Vegas, Nevada, clinics tell CNN that the cardiologist should keep his license because, they say, he saves lives.

"I had a heart attack 10 years ago and he saved my life," said Gerry Cause, who says he drives a 320-mile round trip for his appointments at Murray's Las Vegas clinic. "He's the most compassionate man. He loves his patients."

"Dr. Murray is a good doctor, a very good doctor," said Ransom Craddock, who says he was among the first of Murray's cardiology patients at his Houston clinic when it opened. "We stand together with him in this community."

They will be paying close attention to a hearing in the case on Monday when a Los Angeles judge will listen to arguments about pulling Murray's medical license in California. If that happens, Murray's attorneys say, Nevada and Texas are likely to follow suit.

"The questions the medical boards have is whether or not they have a doctor on their hands that's a threat to public safety and he's just not," said Charles Peckham, Murray's civil attorney. "He's a good doctor. He's a benefit to his patients. He's a benefit to public health."

Murray was charged with involuntary manslaughter in February for providing Jackson with propofol -- a sleeping agent typically used for sedation during surgeries. According to the Los Angeles Coroner's Office, Jackson died of "propofol intoxication."

A court brief filed on behalf of the California Medical Board states' "the Board has pointed out it is not just his 'prescribing' practices that are in question, but his fundamental judgment and skill as a physician."

But Dennis Hix, another heart surgery patient of Dr. Murray's, told CNN, "It's just a shame what's going on."

"Everybody's innocent until proven guilty. He should be allowed to practice. He's still helping me, and I don't want to see him go nowhere," Hix said.

A contingent of Murray's supporters plan a rally at a Houston church on Monday, and some patients from Las Vegas say they plan to drive to Los Angeles during the trial to counter the Michael Jackson fans who show up at hearings waving signs calling the doctor a killer.

"He's one of the most compassionate people I've ever met. I just can't see him being the person he's painted to be," said J.D. Nicholas, who's not only a patient of Murray's but also a member of the group The Commodores, and who knew Michael Jackson.

"I think he should continue to practice. He takes good care of me. I'm in great health thanks to Dr. Murray."

(CNN) -- An awards show appearance crippled Kanye West's career. Can an awards show now help save it?

The beleaguered rapper is set to return to the public eye courtesy of the upcoming BET Awards '10, a rep for the network told CNN.

"Guaranteed to be the biggest night in television, BET is proud to announce and welcome Kanye West to the stage; making this his first major awards show appearance since his appearance on the 2009 MTV VMAs," a press release about the show says. "While West received much backlash and criticism following the VMAs, BET decided to give the multifaceted performer a spot in music history during its 10 year anniversary special."

He is nominated for two awards, but no word yet on what song he will perform.

West has been creeping back into the limelight very slowly. MTV reports that on Tuesday he performed at three Chicago high schools as part of the Kanye West Foundation's third annual Stay in School event.

The BET Awards '10 is set to air live on June 27 from the Shrine Auditorium Los Angeles.

When songstress Freda Payne hits the stage this Sunday to join pianist, harpist and vocalist Corky Hale and friends at the Catalina Bar & Grill in Hollywood, she will be bringing something with her she says lacks in today's music' soul.

'Nowadays when people ask, 'What do you think about the music that's being produced today or the songs that are being written today compared to the songs of yesterday?' I think there is no comparison, I don't know what it is,' Payne said in an interview at her West Hollywood home. 'I think people still have imaginations and talent, but … maybe it was timing of where we were on this planet because everything now is so instantaneous and processed and reproduced, whereas back then everything was slower, things were more real and there weren't so many conveniences but what we've gained from technology, we've lost in soul. I think we had more soul back then.'

Made up of Payne, Hale, Sally Kellerman, Ariana Savalas, Tricia Tahara and Brenna Whitaker, the sextet will perform a collection of acclaimed romantic ballads from the 11-track album titled 'Corky Hale … and Friends' I'm Glad There Is You.'

Payne, who has worked with Hale on several projects, was approached by the world renowned jazz artist and neighbor — they live minutes from one another — about doing the project. For Payne, a Detroit-native who performed her first studio recording at the age of 13, 'it was an honor,' she said. 'I have a lot of respect for her as a musician.'

Hale had already given thought to which songs she wanted Payne to sing, and luckily they were ones she adored' 'Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair,' a traditional American folk song, and 'Alfie,' a 1960s classic written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David.

On the album, Payne's jazzy voice resonated, creating emotional moments where she dipped low in her register before taking her vocals to familiar heights that can be compared to late-greats like Ella Fitzgerald and Lena Horn — all of whom were her role models growing up.

'Alfie,' said Payne, is one of those songs that has legs and has survived over the decades because the words are not only honest but philosophic, providing wisdom and questioning life's meaning.

'Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair,' on the other hand, 'makes you think about being in love, if you were in love or are in love,' added Payne, who herself was reminded about being in 'the throws of love, reaching that point of euphoria where that person has enraptured you and you kind of almost worship that man for that time period.'

Following her stint at the Catalina Bar & Grill, 6725 W. Sunset Blvd., beginning at 7'30 p.m., Payne will perform at the Ella Fitzgerald Performing Arts Center, where she will pay tribute to the legendary artist. Then in August, she will be part of a PBS special called 'Marvin Hamlisch Presents' The Way We Were — The '70s,' where she will sing 'Band of Gold' and 'Bring the Boys Home' before returning to the Catalina Bar & Grill in September to do her own solo work.

'Music is everything to me, music is my life,' said Payne. 'Because of music I am where I am today. Music has been my saving grace in every way, not just financially but spiritually and it brings me a lot of happiness and joy.'
