WILLOWBROOK -- The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is expected to give final approval Tuesday for a plan to reopen Martin Luther King Jr. Hospital in Willowbrook, it was reported Sunday.

Under the plan, the supervisors will partner with the University of California system to open a 120-bed impatient facility by December 2012, the Daily Breeze reported. The UC Board of Regents approved the plan Nov. 19 at its monthly meeting.

Plans also include construction of a new inpatient tower, along with work to existing buildings that would house an emergency room and ambulatory care center. The county would spend about $400 million to upgrade the facilities, and more than $100 million in startup costs and operating expenses.

One of the new aspects of the plan is a requirement by UC system officials that the county secure a $100 million line of credit in case the hospital runs into financial difficulty, the Daily Breeze reported.

Under the plan, the UC system would provide physicians and medical staff, and would establish a graduate teaching program at the hospital. A nonprofit board with members appointed by the county and UC system would run the hospital.
