CULVER CITY — New shopping experiences are sprouting in Culver City.
The new Sprouts Farmers Market, a 29,130-square-foot grocery store, has replaced the shuttered Circuit City at 5660 Sepulveda Blvd.
With roughly 100 workers on hand, the market opened June 23. It is the chain’s 51st store — a 52nd is expected to open in Pasadena next month.
“We are always looking around, especially in Southern California and Northern California, to find areas that are underserved when it comes to natural foods and may not have access to affordable, healthier alternatives,” said Doug Sanders, president and CEO of Sprouts. “We try to target those areas.”
Sprouts provides low-cost natural and organic foods, such as fresh produce, all-natural meats, seafood — delivered six days a week — more than 300 bins of spices, nuts, rice and grains, milk, gluten-free products, imported cheeses, vitamins and supplements, deli meats and baked goods.
A stark contrast when compared to more traditional grocery stores — like Ralph’s, Vons, or Pavillions — consumers are given a different shopping experience, said Sanders, starting with the layout.
When shoppers walk in, they may not have to strain their eyes to see what is down every aisle because Sprouts has “low-profile shelving,” he added. “You can actually see from one side of the store to the other. You don’t have the 10-foot aisles that you would see in your conventional stores.”
And as far as their goods, Sanders said, not only do most traditional stores not supply all natural or organic foods in bulk, but if they do, it is at the cost of the consumer.
Prices, Sanders said, are comparable to that of Trader Joe’s and the prices are kept low by sorting, shifting and warehousing all their produce. Savings also come in the form of not having to pay for packaging.
The perk, he added, is that the majority of the produce sold is grown right here in California.
Also, what sets Sprouts apart is their trained staff that is on hand to answer questions customers may have about their foods or vitamins and supplements.
The feedback on opening day, said Sanders, was “very positive. ... I”m not sure if people knew what to expect but I think they enjoyed having a new place to shop and affordable prices and healthy foods that we offer. The shopping experience as a whole was very well received.”
And more than a week after its opening, consumers are still piling in and leaving with great reviews.
Alice White, who was patronizing the store on Friday, said “I am really impressed by the large variety of foods they have here. If everything tastes as good as it looks, they can consider me a customer for life.”
Jeanne Baker purchased eggs, milk, fruit and meets “at a low price, much lower than some grocery stores,” she said. “I like going to my traditional grocery stores, like Ralphs and Pavillions, but this one seems to be a breath of fresh air. With our society moving toward more healthy living, this market will be able to provide them the things they need to do that.”
Vicky Rothlisberger, who has been eating natural and organic foods for more than three years, “will be using the store frequently but that does not mean I will not use more traditional stores. I have found over the years that you have to shop around. So, what I may not want to get here — like paper goods or cleaning products — I will get at the more traditional grocery store. But overall I think this is a great asset to the community.”
Jeremy Fry, who admitted his wife does most of their grocery shopping, was “thrilled to have this here.”
“I used to visit Circuit City all the time because of the electronics and it’s a man’s store,” he joked, “but I definitely like what I see here. I may still leave my wife to do most of the shopping but being picky about my supplements, I will probably come in myself to get those.”
Sprouts, headquartered in Phoenix, was founded in 2002 and has 51 stores in four states — Colorado, California, Texas and Arizona. The Culver City location is open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
