The Blind Childrens Center held a dedication ceremony Dec. 9 for a new van that was donated by area Lions Clubs.

The ceremony included a presentation by Judith Olmsted Powell, past district governor of Lions District 4-L2. She explained the role of the Lions in the donation and introduced Kenny Shu, project chairman and a member of the East Valley Lions Club.

Shu said the Lions Club theme for 2008 was “Miracles Through Service,” which guided their fundraising effort.

“To me, this van project is the perfect example of Lions Clubs and members making miracles happen,” Shu said. The van was a joint fundraising effort between area Lions Clubs and the Lions Clubs International Foundation. A representative from Rep. Judy Chu’s office presented Shu with a certificate of recognition for his work.

Lions Clubs participating in the fundraising effort included Alhambra, Montebello, Rosemead, and Whittier. Additional individual Lions also donated to the cause.

The Blind Childrens Center is a nonprofit family-centered agency devoted to helping children who are blind or visually impaired have the best quality and most productive lives possible. The center’s programs and services help the children, from infants through second grade, acquire skills and build their independence.
