WHITTIER — Russell Castaneda Calleros, a Rio Hondo College administrator, will be installed as a member of the Whittier Union school board in a ceremony at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the board chambers, 9401 S. Painter Ave.

He was selected by the school board from among 14 applicants for the remaining two years in the term of Alex Morales, which ends in November 2011, a district representative said.

The vote was 3-1 with board member Leighton Anderson dissenting.

Morales resigned his seat to focus his attention on his candidacy for the Whittier City Council in the April 13 municipal election.

Among the candidates were three former trustees on various boards in the Whittier area, Michelle Yanez-Jimenez, Janet Rock and Oscar Payan.
Yanez-Jimenez previously served on the Rio Hondo College Board of Trustees, Rock was a member of the Little Lake school board and Payan was a member of the Los Nietos school board.

Other applicants included: Dominic Adamo, a Bassett Unified School District administrator; Angel Gallardo, a Montebello Unified School District administrator; James Hickey, a Los Angeles County prosecutor; Pamela Johnson, a former Montebello Unified School District administrator; Jeff Lopez, a Whittier city Web and recreation specialist; Adrian Martinez, a Los Angeles Unified School District teacher; Brandon Martinez, a USC assistant professor; Irma Rodriguez Moisa, an attorney; Timothy Rodriguez, a Graves Middle School library technician; and Ruby Trow, a Cal Poly Pomona professor.

The 14 applicants underwent a public interview session Feb. 20 during a special school board meeting.

Morales was first elected to the school board in 1997. Prior to that he served six years on the Rio Hondo College Board of Trustees in Whittier and eight years on the Little Lake City school board.
