WHITTIER — The City Council and the city of Montebello have approved plans to sell Whittier some 45 bus stops, used by the Montebello Bus Lines in the city of Whittier, and upgrade them.

Total cost of the project is estimated at $825,000 with $660,000 in federal transportation grant funds from the Montebello Bus Lines, which provides transit service in Whittier. The city would pay the rest, said Fran Shields, director of community services.

Shields said plans call for improvements at 45 bus stops in Whittier over a period of seven to 10 years as funds become available.

The Whittier City Council approved initial plans are to upgrade 18 bus stop sites and told staff to advertise for construction bids on Feb. 9.

Work on the 18 sites must be completed by June 30 to meet requirements of the grant, Shields said

The initial focus will be bus stops on Philadelphia Street, Washington Boulevard and Painter Avenue, she added.

Work at each of the 18 sites will cost about $45,000, with $36,000 from the grant and $9,000 per site from the city. Whittier’s local match will come from Los Angeles County Proposition A sales tax funds.

Shields said the upgrade at each site would include a solar panel shelter, a bench, a trash receptacle, new concrete paving and a solar bus stop pole.
