WHITTIER — Steve Helvey, the city manager here for the past 10 years, has retired but he will still be around as a part-time administrator.

He officially retired July 1 to comply with state pension rules, but has been hired by the City Council and can work up to 960 hours a year under the rules, said Assistant City Manager Nancy Mendez.

Helvey, who was assistant city manager in Burbank for 17 years before coming to Whittier, will be on the job each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Mendez said.
There is no time limit on the contract.

Jeff Collier, director of community development, has been named interim assistant city manager and will work with her on administrative issues Monday and Friday along with their regular duties, Mendez said.
