SANTA FE SPRINGS — The City Council Aug. 26 voted 5-0 to hire Assistant City Manager Thad McCormack to replace Fred Latham when the latter retires next Feb. 1.

The four-year contract with McCormack offers a starting salary of $162,000 a year plus benefits, minus the 9 percent cut city officials and employees have agreed to in the coming year to balance the budget.

McCormack, 43, has been with the city of Santa Fe Springs since 1998. Before that he worked in the private sector for the Xerox Corporation in the customer relations field.

A native of the Whittier area, he graduated from California High School, earned a bachelor’s degree in political science with an emphasis on public administration from Cal State Long Beach and a master’s degree in political science from Cal State Fullerton.

McCormack began as an administrative intern in 1998 and worked his way up in city’s administrative department.

During that time he has been involved in a variety of city operations including transportation, waste management, public information and special projects.
He and his wife, Eva, have three sons.

Latham, city manager in Santa Fe Springs since 1998, announced in May that he would retire when his current contract expires early next year.

His salary has been listed at $217,666 a year but he had agreed to take a 10 percent cut in his final year in keeping with most other employees because of the city’s budget crunch.

Because of that Santa Fe Springs officials have placed a proposition on the Nov. 2 ballet seeking a 5 percent utility tax hike.
