MONTEBELLO — The City Council has hired a new interim city administrator.

Peter Cosentini was appointed to the post after a 4-1 vote Aug. 25. He began work at City Hall the next day.

Councilwoman Christina Cortez cast the dissenting vote.

Cosentini, 59, actually is an employee of MuniTemps, a municipal contract agency that is owned by John Herrera, the interim finance director in Pico Rivera.

MuniTemps will receive $17,500 a month to cover Cosentini’s salary, benefits and insurance.

Cosentini has 26 years of experience in local governments. He has held city manager posts in five cities in the state: Galt, Calistoga, Santa Paula, Half Moon Bay and San Jacinto.

He said his priority will be the city’s budget, which hasn’t been formally adopted by the council.

The city has been trying to close a projected $4 million deficit and negotiations with labor groups have been under way for months.

Cosentini replaces Randy Narramore as interim city administrator. The city has been without a permanent city administrator since Richard Torres retired last year.
