SANTA FE SPRINGS — Santa Fe Springs and La Mirada officials will conduct open houses next Tuesday at the La Mirada Activity Center, 13810 La Mirada Blvd., to update area residents and businesses on the Valley View Avenue grade separation project.
They and project personnel will be on hand to meet with residents from 6 to 8 p.m., and will give a short presentation at 6:30 p.m.
A separate open house focusing on the business community will be held from 3 to 5 p.m., with a presentation scheduled for 3:30 p.m., a representative said.
Under discussion will be the $75.2 million project to build a bridge at Valley View Avenue and Stage Road to carry trains over the intersection. Work is expected to start early next year.
Santa Fe Springs Public Works Director Don Jensen said the purpose is to allow the public to learn more about the project status, construction schedule and how access to local residential areas and businesses in the Valley View Avenue area will be handled during construction.
He noted that a website, www.vvgs.org, has been created to provide residents, businesses and motorists with more information about the project.
The website contains project information and background, a schedule, renderings, and animations showing what the finished project will look like.
“The purpose of the website is to be a one-stop shop for information for the community,” Jensen said. “We hope the information found on the website will be helpful to motorists, residents and businesses that may be affected. We encourage citizens to visit the site often for updates.”
After construction begins, the website will be updated monthly about project activities completed in the prior month and activities planned for the upcoming month.
The Valley View grade separation project is a joint effort of Santa Fe Springs and La Mirada, in conjunction with the state Department of Transportation and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway.
It will involve the construction of an underpass at the intersection of Valley View Avenue and Stage Road to allow Valley View to travel underneath the railroad tracks, Jensen said.
The primary objectives of the project are to reduce traffic delays and noise and improve safety for rail passengers, motorists and pedestrians.
Construction is scheduled to start early in 2011 and continue through mid-2013.
