SANTA FE SPRINGS — After a closed session Aug. 12, the City Council announced that it was in negotiations with Assistant City Manager Thad McCormack to replace Fred Latham when the latter retires Feb. 1, 2011.
Final action is expected at the council meeting Aug. 26.
McCormack, 43, has been with the city since 1998. Before that, he worked in the private sector in the customer relations field.
He and his wife, Eva, have three children.
Latham has been city manager since 1998 and has worked for the city since 1973. He announced in May that he would retire when his current contract expires early next year.
His salary has been listed at $217,666 a year but he agreed to take a 10 percent cut his final year in keeping with most other employees because of the city’s budget crunch.
In other action Aug. 12, the council:
• Agreed to place the city in the Los Angeles County Recycling Market Development Zone. Latham, in a written report to the council, explained that the program is operated by the state Department of Resources and Recycling (CalRecycle) which will offer loans to businesses in the recycling market development zone if they use recycled materials. Also offered are free technical advice and marketing. Other area cities already in the county zone include Carson, Commerce, Compton, Inglewood, South Gate and Vernon.
Cost to join the county group is $1,500 a year.
“Joining … has potentials for helping Santa Fe Springs businesses,” Latham said. “Owners will be able to apply for loans, get technical advice while reducing the waste stream in the city and network[ing] with businesses with similar interests.”
• Renewed for another year its contract with Graffiti Tracker Inc. for graffiti analysis services to help identify and pinpoint locations of certain graffiti perpetrators. Cost is $18,000.
