DOWNEY — City officials who would like to see more nightlife downtown have two restaurants, one with entertainment and one on the way.

The downtown area is generally on either side of Downey Avenue from Firestone Boulevard north to Fifth Street.

The City Council Nov. 10 waived 18 on-site parking spaces required under city code for the Icon Cafe, 8237-8239 Second St. Parking is based on the size of the building.

In similar action Oct. 27, the City Council waived nine parking spaces for the planned Euro Fresh Salads and More eatery at 11126 Downey Ave.

Gilbert Livas, deputy city manager for community development, said Euro Salad would have 1,450 square feet of floor space plus another 558 square feet for outdoor eating, thus requiring 10 spaces. But the site only has room for one space under the plan of owner Mauricio Durazo.

Euro Salads will instead pay the city $1,800 a year to use spaces in the nearby city parking lot at Second and New Avenue.

The Icon Cafe owner will pay the city $3,600 a year to use 18 spaces in the parking structure.

The facility will feature live music during evening hours. It will be open from 8 a.m. to midnight Sunday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays, Livas said.

Entertainment will be permitted from 7 p.m. to one hour before closing time. Because the sale of alcoholic beverages is already permitted, no one under age 21 may be in the business after 9 p.m. under requirements of the Planning Commission.
