NORWALK — The Planning Commission will consider at its meeting next Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. the request of Victor Espindola of Dona Maria’s Mexican Restaurant, 11600 E. Rosecrans Ave., to re-establish a bar with the sale of alcoholic beverages.

Commissioners first heard the request Aug. 11 and continued the issue to Wednesday.

Espindola also has requested a permit for live entertainment, primarily a mariachi band or trio during weekends, with a dance floor covering less than 100 square feet; and rental of space for private events.

In a written report to the commission Aug. 11, Senior Planner Jessica Serrano said the facility operated as a restaurant and bar with live entertainment from January 2004 to July 2009 under the name Sara’s Mexican Restaurant.

That restaurant, under previous owners, lost its liquor license last year after being charged with selling alcoholic beverages to minors.

The owners of the building leased it to a new management which reopened the restaurant as the Paloma Piano Bar and Grill July 20, 2009, but it closed in November.

New owners in January renamed the facility Sol de Oro but also lost their license when they were charged with selling alcoholic beverages without a city permit. The facility again closed earlier this year.

The current applicant, Espindola, reopened the restaurant part of the business June 20 under the current name and seeks to re-establish the bar and entertainment uses, Serrano said.

The restaurant is located within 300 feet of residential properties, so commission approval is required.
