PARAMOUNT — Bi-monthly water bills for the 7,400 customers of the city system will go up 10 percent, effective Sept. 1, following approval by the City Council Aug. 3.

The action came after a public hearing in compliance with state Proposition 218, which would nullify any increase if opposed by a majority of customers.

No letters of protest were received, said Finance Director Karina Lam. She noted that the hike was already approved by City Council in the current budget.

The main reason for the increase is the higher cost of buying water from the Central Basin Municipal Water District, to supplement local wells.

Lam warned that a 9.5 percent hike by the regional body is expected next year.
Despite the hike, Paramount’s rate is still among the lowest in the area, Lam said.

The base rate for the average home with a 50-8ths-inch or three-quarter-inch meter using 10 units of water every two months is $15.39. A unit is about 100 cubic feet of water or 748 gallons.

The bill, paid every other month, rises based on the amount of water used and size of meter.
