BELLFLOWER — Trash pickup rates for residents will go down a bit in the annual readjustment of cost in the contract with hauler CR&R of Stanton.

Public Works Director Deborah Chankin said residents get a decrease because of the drop in the cost of gas and because about 20 percent of the city’s trash is taken to a landfill in Orange County, which charges less than the one at Puente Hills in Los Angeles County.

Therefore, beginning in the next billing session, residential cost for a weekly pickup will drop from $17.39 a month to $17.25. The decrease is from $13.44 to $13.33 for low-income residents and $16.05 to $15.92 a month for senior citizens.

Collection fees will rise for commercial customers by 1.4 to 1.9 percent based on the size of the bin and number of pickups a week.

Chankin noted that the contract with CR&R calls for a 40 cents per month transition fee to prepare for hauling trash to new landfills in San Bernardino and Riverside counties when Puente Hills closes in 2013.

With the added 40 cents, residents would pay $17.65 a month, ranking sixth among area cities behind Signal Hill, $13.77; Downey, $14.31; Cerritos, $15.31; Lakewood, $15.32 and Paramount, $16.28.

For commercial firms with a three-yard bin and weekly pickup, the cost to Bellflower property owners is $108.55 a month, the third lowest in the area behind Downey $104.24; and Paramount, $105.40 a month, Chankin said.
CR&R has been Bellflower’s trash hauler since 2005. There was an increase in 2008 but none in 2009, she noted.
