A new scholarship to honor recently retired county Supervisor Yvonne Burke has been announced by the California State University system.

Scholarships of about $2,500 will be awarded annually in Burke’s name, made possible by a $50,000 gift from the Board of Supervisors in recognition of Burke’s years on the board and her connection to Cal State Dominguez Hills, which is in the district she represented.

Burke retired from the Board of Supervisors at the end of November and was succeeded by Mark Ridley-Thomas.

“Cal State Dominguez Hills educates many of the best and brightest who contribute to our community in every field,” Burke said. “I am proud and thankful that I can be a part of the enhancement of these students through this scholarship.”

The first scholarships will be awarded to students in spring 2010, school officials said.
