LYNWOOD — An off-duty sheriff’s deputy opened fire Wednesday on a suspected gang member in Lynwood, but the man was taken into custody without bloodshed, authorities said.

The shooting occurred in the 3500 block of Brenton Avenue near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard about 1 a.m., said Deputy Jeff Gordon of the Sheriff’s Headquarters Bureau.

“The deputy was not injured, and the suspect was not hit,” Gordon said.

The deputy, who was off duty at the time, was in his parked car with a friend when 20-year-old Carlos Aguirre came up to the car and “initiated a verbal confrontation,” according to sheriff’s Sgt. David Infante, who identified Aguirre as a local gang member.

Aguirre left, but returned with a handgun and fired one round at the deputy, missing him, Infante said.

The deputy, whose name was withheld, returned one shot, missing Aguirre, said Infante.

Aguirre, who apparently ran away after the gunfire, was arrested nearby by deputies from the sheriff’s Century Station and is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail for assault on a peace officer with a firearm, the sergeant said.

Deputies and police dogs searched the area, but were unable to locate Aguirre’s handgun, he said.

The Sheriff’s Internal Affairs Bureau, attorneys with the County of Los Angeles Office of Independent Review and the Sheriff’s Executive Force Review Committee are handling the investigation.

The story to me sounds like the guy never had a gun and the cop just shot at him (while off duty) and when the kid ran other cops arrested him.

How come the sheriff missed the mexican at close range, but riddled the black boy from behind? Something is wrong with this picture.
