LYNWOOD — Six candidates have qualified for the Nov. 3 ballot for the Lynwood school board election and seven candidates, including three incumbents, are seeking seats on the Lynwood City Council.
“I knew it was going to be a small number,” said Mayor Maria Santillan, who is among the incumbents trying to keep their seats. “The number nears 20 when the community is unhappy with how the city is being run. The fact that there are only seven of us, in my opinion, is proof that the community is happy with what this council is doing.”
Santillan, who is serving her second year as mayor, is up for re-election along with City Councilmen Ramon Rodriguez and Jim Morton. According to the city clerk’s office, all three turned in their paperwork on time, with their list of 20 nominating signatures being verified by the county Registrar of Voters Office.
The three incumbents are facing challengers Edwin Jacinto, Walter Lopez, Patricia Carr and former City Treasurer Iris Pygatt. All four challengers have also been qualified by the registrar’s office.
On the other side of Bullis Road at the school district’s headquarters, School Board Vice President Alfonso Morales Jr. is up for re-election, along with longtime school board member Rachel Chavez. Both have been qualified by the County to run for re-election.
Morales and Chavez face challengers Gloria Garcia, Nancy O. Montes, Anastasia Ventura and Dorothy Plummer-Jones.
All four challengers also filed their papers on time.
According to Eileen Shea of the County Registrar Recorder’s Office in Norwalk, as of Wednesday afternoon, all of the candidates in both the district and city races, will be on the November ballot.
In other school district activity, proponents of an attempt to recall four school board members, including Chavez, Jose Solache, Oscar Espinoza and Maria Lopez, failed to follow through on the process.
“It appears that the steps in the [intent to recall] process were not completed by the proponents,” Shea said. “Thus, at this point, if the proponents wanted to pursue the recall, they would have to start all over again.”
