LYNWOOD -- Gang enforcement officers from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department shot and killed a 17-year-old boy in Lynwood and recovered a handgun at the scene, a deputy said Sunday.

The deputy-involved shooting occurred around 7 p.m. Saturday in the 3100 block of Banning Avenue, near Peach Street, said Deputy Rick Pedroza of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau.

"The shooting involved our gang enforcement team,'' Pedroza said.

The boy allegedly had run from deputies earlier in the evening, he said.

It was unclear why they tried to stop him.

When the two deputies again attempted to contact the boy, he allegedly reached into his waistband, produced a handgun and pointed it at the deputies, Pedroza said.

Both deputies, fearing for their safety, fired at the boy, striking him multiple times, he said.

The boy was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Pedroza said.

A handgun was recovered at the scene, he said.
