LYNWOOD — The Lynwood Unified School District showed a slight improvement in the 2009 state Academic Performance Index scores, according to results released last week by the state Department of Education.
The district had an overall score of 675, a gain of three points from 2008.
The API results are based on a number of tests taken by public school students last spring. API scores are compiled by combining student test scores to determine the average for a school and for its district. Results for individual students are not listed.
Demographic and social economic factors of a school are included in tabulating the scores.
Scores range from 200 to 1,000, with a score of 800 being the goal. Schools must increase their average by five percent each year.
The statewide API score increased by 14 points, from 741 in 2008 to 755 this year.
The top elementary school was Helen Keller Elementary, which hit the 800 goal exactly, an increase of 66 from the previous year. Lincoln Elementary, which surpassed the goal last year with a score of 814, dropped 57 points this year to 757.
Other elementary scores were: Abbott, 764, a drop of 15; Lindbergh, 727, a gain of 17; Lugo, 736, a gain of 32; Mark Twain, 739, a gain of 26; Roosevelt, 715, a gain of 42; Rosa Parks, 762, a drop of nine; Thurgood Marshall, 742, a gain of 29; Washington, 776, a gain of 40; Will Rogers, 694, a drop of 17; and Wilson, 748, a gain of 44.

Lynwood High School scored 589, a gain of four, while Firebaugh High dropped 21 points to 689.
