SANTA MONICA — A Lynwood High School teacher was one of 54 teachers from throughout the country honored Saturday with the Milken Educator Award from the Milken Family Foundation at the Sheraton Delfina Hotel here.

Ana Higuera of Lynwood High was one of only four teachers from California selected for the honor.

More than $1.3 million in cash awards was presented to the newest class of Milken educators.

“Three decades of work in business and philanthropy have reaffirmed my belief that education is the most vital means of securing the future for our nation and our youth,” said Milken Family Foundation Chairman and Co-Founder Lowell Milken. “With research confirming that the quality of the teacher is the most important school-related factor affecting student outcomes, it is imperative that we recognize the essential contribution that teachers make to our society and that we implement successful reforms to increase teacher effectiveness from coast to coast.”

Dubbed the Oscars of Teaching by Teacher Magazine, the Milken Educator Awards, first presented in 1987, have bestowed more than $60 million to more than 2,400 teachers.

To AVID said on Sunday, May 30 at 8:45 PM

AVID is not that bad. I was in it and it kinda helped. But it could be way better. I know we sat in our AVID classes and just messed around a lot of the times. Sometimes we weren't challenged and it was kick back. The field trips were cool. I remember we did a final AVID project to show off our learning but it was all pictures we posed to make it look good to our teachers. I guess looking back, that's not good but in high school it was fine. I have friends in college who were in AVID in other schools and they did AVID different.

AVID gets kids that already are going to college and says they are the reason they went to college. There would be more credit if they really get the 2.0 gpa students or lower and help them get to another level. When they fail, they kick them out to not mess up the program. Anyone who teaches AVID all day long will be a great teacher. With great teaching awards comes great responsibility. Oh yeah, the Milken family history is interesting. Look it up and see why they do this award.

Haters? said on Saturday, May 29 at 11:03 PM

I only see one negative comment on here that is derogatory toward her teaching professionalism. The rest of the comments do not pertain to the winner who received $25,000. One jealous comment maybe, but haters?

I do not know Ana personally, but I have seen many students, including my little bro, whom have been touched by her teaching and have gone on to receive higher a level of education. She is an ispiration and a product of this community. To all those whom have a hard time seeing the fruits of her labor, stop hating!

How long is Mr. Chambers going to continue abusing students at Lynwood High. The man is crazy and he is getting away with the bad things he does. The administration should transfer him somewhere else because he is bad. Anybody here that has been abused phyciclly and mentally should post a comment. Chambers you are very unprefessional.

The Milliken Mills in South Carolina and throughout the southeast USA were noted for their non union jobs and lack of concern for employee welfare. Now 25 years later they are awarding $$ to teachers! A lotta sweatshop sweat went into making those dollars.

I don't know this teacher, but I'm sure this prestigious organization knows how to identify highly effective teachers. You sound very bitter. What a shame.
