BOYLE HEIGHTS — Every year, White Memorial Medical Center Foundation Board members and volunteers collect more than 5,000 toys for the hospital to give to local low-income children and children treated in the hospital’s Cleft Palate, Pediatrics, Emergency Room and Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit during the holiday season.

On Dec. 5, the effort received special donations of toys from 80 TELACU scholars and Citi. Citi heard about the students outreach and donated $2,500 to their cause.

The TELACU scholarship recipients are first generation full-time college students from low-income families themselves — most earning less than $10,000 annually.

Despite their own circumstances, these generous students reached into their own pockets this holiday season to provide more than 400 toys for White Memorial’s Toy Drive and those children less fortunate from the community.

That's what it's all about. These scholars are the type of people with brains and heart. It's good to know that some young people still have good sense. I was beginning to wonder. The children will not forget your generousity. You didn't forget.
