BOYLE HEIGHTS — Students from Francisco Bravo Medical Magnet High School have finished in the top three for the fourth year in a row at the 16th annual American Society of Civil Engineers Popsicle Stick Bridge Building contest.

Members of this year’s team are Charisse Wong, Winnie Wong and Michelle Lee. The team was coached by longtime Bravo science teacher Michael Morgan.

The competition was held Feb. 19 at the California Science Center where more than 40 teams from Los Angeles and Orange county high schools participated.

The student entries were judged on multiple categories including technical reports, presentation, poster boards, the ability of their bridge to support large weights, aesthetics and efficiency. Popsicle stick bridges can only be constructed of standard Popsicle sticks and white school glue. Parameters for the bridge design are supplied by the society and bridges can weigh no more than one pound.

Bravo High School’s bridge supported 686 pounds and weighed only 450 grams. In addition to the overall third place finish, the team also took second place in the category of bridge strength. Additionally, Bravo High School’s second team consisting of Amelia Aguilar, Angie Yi, Liliam Montoya and Carol Yeung won second place in bridge aesthetics.
