SOUTH GATE — Acknowledging that the recession will probably delay the city’s long-planned $175 million, 30.5-acre Gateway shopping center project, the City Council has extended for one year the contract of the project manager.

Council members Feb. 24 extended to February 2010, the contract with Gafcon, Inc. for $150,000.

The proposed shopping center site is at 4365 Firestone Blvd., near Atlantic Avenue.

Steve Lefever, director of community development, noted that Gafcon was first hired for one year in August 2007. The contract was extended for another year in April 2008.

He said the total cost of the contracts, now projected at $410,000, will be paid by the developer, South Gate Gateway.

Proposed is 517,000 square feet of building space, to include two or three large retail stores, several sit-down restaurants, small shops, specialty businesses such as a fitness center and a movie theater.

When completed, the development is expected to earn about $2 million a year in sales tax revenue for the city, Lefever said.

To date, announced tenants have included a movie theater and a Target store, he said.
