A Bellflower girl won top honors in this year’s 34th Congressional District Student Art Competition, according to Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard, D-Los Angeles.

Additional winners were two students from Downey, two from Bellflower and one from Bell.

The first-place prize went to Johnell Hipol of Bellflower, a senior at Mayfair High School in Lakewood.

Her marker and pen piece titled “Viva La Vida” (Living the Life) will be exhibited at the U.S. Capitol for one year, Roybal-Allard said.

Hipol received a four-day trip for two to Washington for the June 24 national exhibit opening and $500 spending money.

She also won a $1,000 scholarship, a $200 gift certificate for art supplies, and $150 cash.

In addition, a copy of her piece was printed on 2,000 posters representing the competition, Roybal-Allard said.

Her teacher, Dan Madison, also received a trip to Washington and a $600 gift certificate for art supplies that will benefit Mayfair High School art students.

“Art as self-expression lets us be spontaneous and think outside of the box,” Hipol said. “In my artwork, I have highlighted the significance of family in my own way.”

Five additional student finalists also were honored. They included:

• Warren High School senior Brittney Dreher of Downey placed second with her painting entitled, “Highlight of My Life.” She won a $750 scholarship, a $175 gift
certificate for art supplies and $100 cash, while Warren High School received a $500 gift certificate for art supplies.

• Raylene Morales of Bellflower, a senior at Mayfair High School, placed third with her piece entitled “Unspoken Words.” She won a $500 scholarship, a $150 gift certificate for art supplies, and $100 cash. Her school received a $400 gift certificate for art supplies.

• Julian Whitfield of Downey, a senior at Columbus Continuation High School, won an honorable mention award for his acrylic painting entitled “Technicolor Vocal Vomit.”

• Victoria Parks of Bellflower, a freshman at Bellflower High School, received an honorable mention award for her painting entitled “Peace and Life.”

• Jamilet Bautista of Bell, a junior at Maywood Academy High School in Maywood, also received an honorable mention for her pencil drawing entitled “United Immigrants We Are.”

Each of the honorable mention recipients won a $250 scholarship, a $125 gift certificate for art supplies, and $100 cash, Royball Allard said.

A $300 gift certificate for art supplies was also awarded to each of the students’ schools that received honorable mention.

All of the finalists’ artwork will be displayed in Roybal-Allard’s District Office in Los Angeles for one year.

In addition to the finalists’ prizes, each school that submitted five or more entries will receive a $100 gift certificate for art supplies.
