SOUTH GATE — Lucky, a supermarket founded in 1935 in San Mateo County, returned to the Southeast area May 20 with the grand opening of a store at 4155 Tweedy Blvd.

Lucky will occupy the site of a former Albertsons Market. Albertsons purchased a number of Lucky stores several years ago.

The Minnesota-based SuperValu chain acquired Albertsons retail properties in 2006 and has revived the Lucky name, a representative said.

The South Gate store employs approximately 60.

Resident, civic dignitaries and store associates took part in the ceremony May 20.

“Serving the needs of our customers is our first priority and we wouldn’t be able to provide the high level of service you’ve come to expect without the tremendous associates who have worked hard through the store transition to make this grand opening possible,” said Lucky store director, Ernie Flores.

The South Gate Lucky shelves will feature mostly fresh meats, specialty produce and ethnic foods, Flores said.

Open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., the South Gate Lucky is a full-service grocery store with bakery, service deli, pharmacy and a meat section, a representative said.

Although the number of items carried at the store is typically less than a traditional grocery store, Lucky's customers can get any additional items they want by taking advantage of a special request program, the representative added.

Store officials made a formal donation to the South Gate Junior Athletic Association during the grand opening ceremonies.

Flores also announced plans for future community events at the store that will mirror the community’s ethnic diversity and interests.
