All incumbent council members in Bell Gardens and Maywood filed for re-election Nov. 3 by the Friday deadline, according to city clerk representatives in the two cities.

They all face several challengers.

In Bell Gardens, Mayor Priscilla Flores, Councilman Daniel Crespo and appointed Councilman Sergio Infanzon have filed. Infanzon replaced former Councilman Mario Beltran, who had to resign after pleading guilty no four misdemeanor counts involving the misuse of campaign funds in January.

Challengers are Javier Sanchez, a lifelong city resident employed at the Bicycle Club; Luis Arias, a businessman; Maria Cristina Garcia, a professor; Esterlina Lugo, a deputy city clerk; and Marthanne Viurquiz, a legal representative.

In Maywood, incumbents Felipe Aguirre, Thomas Martin and Sergio Calderon have filed along with challengers Ramon Medina, Oscar Magaña and Edward Varela.

In addition, Maywood plans an advisory question on the ballot asking voters’ opinions on the plans by the Los Angeles Unified School District to build a regional high school on the northeast corner of Slauson and King avenues.

Bell Gardens voters also will help elect school board candidates in the Montebello Unified School District.

Incumbents Hector Chacon of Commerce and Edwin Chau and Gerri Guzman, both of Montebello, are running against Carlos Morales Illingworth, a community relations manager; and Mary Lou Saavedra, a district personnel commissioner, both of Montebello.
