SOUTH GATE — Former Police Chief George Troxcil will return to the city on a part-time basis while current Chief Vincent Avila is out on sick leave.
The City Council Oct. 13 agreed to rent Troxcil’s time from Rancho Santiago Community College District where he is under contract to oversee the Sheriff’s Training Academy at Santa Ana College.
In a written report to the City Council, City Attorney Raul Salinas said the agreement with the college district calls for the city to pay the district $6,342 a month for six months for a total of $38,052.
Troxcil will serve as acting police chief for 20 hours a week from Oct. 14 to April 14, unless either party cancels the contract, Salinas said.
City Manager Ron Bates proposed the agreement, noting that Troxcil was employed in the city police department from 1970 to 2000 and served as South Gate police chief his last five years.
“Troxcil is known and trusted by various members of the police department and enjoys a strong reputation among peace officers and the community,” Bates said.
During his stint as acting chief, Troxcil will be paid by the college district and will not receive any additional salary or health benefits from the city under the agreement.
However, the city will provide Troxcil with a car and pay insurance and maintenance on the vehicle. He may drive the car out of the area on city business with council approval. The acting chief also will receive a Blackberry phone or similar device for communication for his personal use.
His 20 hours will be at various times based on his other work schedule, Salinas said.
Although Troxcil has the full powers of a police chief, he will be considered a college district employee, according to the agreement.
