City Council seats in Bell Gardens and Maywood will be decided in Tuesday’s election as will ballot issues in Huntington Park and Maywood.

In Bell Gardens, Mayor Priscilla Flores, Councilman Daniel Crespo and appointed Councilman Sergio Infanzon face five challengers.

They are Javier Sanchez, a lifelong city resident employed at the Bicycle Club; Luis Arias, a businessman; Maria Cristina Garcia, a professor; Esterlina Lugo, a deputy city clerk; and Marthanne C. Viurquiz, a legal representative.

In Maywood, incumbents Felipe Aguirre, Thomas Martin and Sergio Calderon are being challenged by Ramon Medina, Oscar Magaña and Edward Varela.

Huntington Park is seeking to raise the city’s utility tax on monthly electricity, natural gas, telephones and water bills from the current 6.75 percent to 8.75 percent. It would generate an added $2 million a year. That would cover the city’s estimated budget deficit.

A utility tax hike could mean an increase of just $2 or $3 a month for most households, City Manager Greg Korduner said. He noted that senior citizens and low-income residents would be exempt from the increase.

Maywood has an advisory question on the ballot asking voters their opinion on plans by the Los Angeles Unified School District to build a regional high school on the northeast corner of Slauson and King avenues.

Council elections in Bell, Cudahy, Huntington Park and South Gate took place last March.
