HUNTINGTON PARK — Vice Mayor John Noguez has decided to preserve his home at 3247 Olive St. for posterity.

The City Council Nov. 16 formally designated Noguez’s home and one at 7030 Marconi St. as historical resources. The latter home is owned by Catherine Franklin.

Historic Preservation Commissioners Barry Milofsky and Michelle Sanchez, respectively, nominated the two homes as being of historical value.

Sanchez has previously nominated her own home, 6727 Santa Fe Ave.,
constructed in 1913, for the historical designation.

Planning Manager Eric Garcia said the two houses, built in 1930, qualify for historic preservation because they are “a unique example of the Spanish Colonial Revival style.”

Structures which qualify for historical preservation come under the state’s Mills Act, which allows incentives such as tax reductions to owners of historical properties.

That tax reduction could be up to 15 percent for a home, 12.11 percent for a commercial site.

However, no major alterations may be made without city approval for such reasons as health and safety.

The 103-year old city established the Historic Preservation Ordinance and commission in 2006 as it marked its centennial year.

Previous-designated historic buildings are the former Warner Theatre, 6710-6720 Pacific Blvd., built in 1930; City Hall, 6550 Miles Ave., built in 1946; and the house of city pioneer George A. Garlow, 6610 Malabar St., which was built in 1903.
