SOUTH GATE — A 42-year-old local man has been arrested by officers of the Southeast Area Animal Control Authority after 67 dogs, most of them allegedly thin and in varied states of bad health, were impounded at a warehouse structure in the 5100 block of Firestone Place Dec. 17.

They are being cared for at the SEAACA center in Downey, said Capt. Aaron Reyes of the animal agency.

Marco De Luna has been cited for felony animal cruelty, pending an appearance in Downey Superior Court, Reyes said.

“A tip brought us to the property initially, which ultimately led to a search warrant being served by SEAACA officers,” Sgt. Charles Miller said. “The entire property, which housed large groups of dogs in separate fabricated rooms, was worse than filthy. Many of the dogs seemed thrilled to see the sunshine and fresh air when we removed them.”

De Luna was arrested on felony animal cruelty charges and transported to the South Gate Police Department, where he was cited, Reyes said.

“Most of the dogs were pit bulls or pit bull mixes — a strong, hearty breed. It was sad to see so many weakened and devoid of body fat, many with overgrown toe nails and skin conditions,” Miller said.

De Luna said he was operating a boarding facility, Reyes said.

“Always check a place out thoroughly before boarding your dog anywhere,” he added. One would only have to get within 50 feet of the front door of this building to know the stench meant trouble.

Anyone with information on dogs being kept at the location is asked to call SEAACA investigators at (562) 803-3301, ext. 250 or 224.
