HUNTINGTON PARK — City officials and staff braved the rain Jan. 21 to formally dedicate their newest “skyscrapers” — two three-level towers which are part of the new 11,000-square-foot playground at Salt Lake Park, 3401 E. Florence Ave.

Despite the rain and low temperature, more than 40 people attended the event, including City Councilman Andy Molina and representatives from the office of Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard and the Los Angeles County Regional Park and Open Space District, each of whom provided grant funding for the project.

“This playground is the largest in the city and will provide families with an attractive, fun, and safe place to create memorable recreation experiences,” said Josette Espinosa, director of parks and recreation.

The new playground replaces an outdated play area and features six pieces including the three-level play structures, a rocks and ropes course, PebbleFlex safety surfacing and new swings.

The park has a pond theme. A splash pad will be added to the playground in the near future, said recreation department representative Danny Bueno.

More than half of the $453,000 project was paid for by county and federal grant funds.

The contractor was Micon Construction and construction began last November.
