HUNTINGTON PARK — Huntington Park College-Ready Academy High School listed strong gains on this year’s California Standards Tests, including a dramatic leap in Algebra I scores, according to a representative of the Alliance Charter School group.
Sixty-three percent of ninth-grade Algebra I students at the Saturn Avenue school reached target scores of proficient or advanced on the test, compared with 48 percent last year and a Los Angeles Unified School District average of 11 percent.
Earth science scores also jumped notably, with 49 percent of students reaching the target scores compared with 32 percent last year and an LAUSD average of 30 percent.
The local school also saw improved scores in Algebra II, Biology and World History, the representative said.
The school is operated by Alliance College-Ready Public Schools, a network of charter schools with offices in Los Angeles.
Overall, the 16 Alliance schools in the Los Angeles area showed improvement in a number of subjects, including gains in math performance and their best-ever scores in English.
The percentage of Alliance students reaching target scores in math has tripled in the past three years, including an increase of six percentage points over the last year, the representative said.
Nearly 4,700 Alliance students in grades six through 11 took the tests last spring in English, math, science and history.
“[Test] results at Huntington Park College-Ready Academy High School and other Alliance locations are an encouraging sign that we are living up to our mission: Helping students from low-income, disadvantaged neighborhoods succeed in the classroom,” said Alliance President and CEO Judy Burton.
Since opening its first school in 2004, the Alliance will grow to 18 sites this fall enrolling approximately 6,000 students with an average daily attendance rate of more than 96 percent, the representative said.
