INGLEWOOD — In one of the lowest voter turnouts in city history, City Councilman Danny Tabor was elected mayor on Tuesday in a muted runoff election against Councilwoman Judy Dunlap.

According to City Clerk Yvonne Horton, with 100 percent of the precincts reporting, Tabor won 2,504 votes to Dunlap’s 1,349.

“With a registered voters roll of 48,200, that is a turnout of eight percent, which is one of the lowest we’ve ever had,” said Horton. “However, there’s still a bit of a ‘clean-up’ to count — walk-ins, et cetera … and the result is officially certified within 14 days.”

Dunlap did not return a call for comment. Previously, she had announced a decision not to mount an active campaign for the seat.

Meanwhile, Tabor — who hosted two celebration parties, one at his Manchester Boulevard campaign headquarters and another in an adjacent courtyard on Market Street — said he looked forward to the challenges ahead.

“I haven’t even looked at the numbers, but I’m not surprised by the result,” Tabor said in an interview, minutes after giving a victory speech to assembled family, friends and supporters.

“Even though Judy said she was not running, it was still incumbent on me to work on getting the turnout, and that’s what we focused on.

“But as I said earlier, tonight is not a milestone. It’s the next step for re-election in November — that’s where we’re really headed for.”

Earning nearly 65 percent of the vote on Tuesday, Tabor will have the advantage of entering the November election as the incumbent.

According to the city clerk, five candidates have emerged for the Nov. 2 primary election to elect a mayor to a full four-year term. Those candidates are Tabor, Dunlap, James Butts, Mike Stevens and Jose Sotto.

If no candidate gets a 50 plus one majority in that round of balloting, a runoff will be scheduled within 71 days.

I just don't get how Inglewood citizens can look at themselves in the mirror when they vote for their candidates. I have thoroughly done research on all candidates and came to the conclusion that Joseph Soto is the ONLY viable candidate for our city. Butts need to live in the city for a few years before he can understand why the people are upset. Tabor and Dunlap are the reason why the city has an 18 million dolor deficit. As a law abiding citizen who has never committed a crime I am insulted by Tabor's hiring of a convicted criminal, I know that everyone needs a second chance but someone who steals from our schools and children should not be in the middle of the city government, that is ridiculous. It's just not right and I'm sorry but I cannot condone that action or vote for a man who does not care about what the law abiding citizens think.

hey Anonymous - before you post something, learn how to spell. you come off as a complete idiot and therefore cannot be taken seriously. Try being a little more cogent next time when you post on here. Butts is scum of the earth and has the ego the size of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. He will ruin what is left of Inglewood. If you read the L.A. Times recent article, you will see he is being sued for his discrimination in promotion tactics at LAX. That is just the tip of the iceberg with Butts. Even if proven not guilty, how does someone in this day and age even get accused of discrimination without having a hint of truth to it. I'm voting Tabor in November just as I did a few weeks ago!

Disgusted I agree about how worthless Danny Tabor is. I got him in my book as one spineless leader who has no problem hiring criminals. I also have Mr. Butts as one carpet bagger who will not change our sorry police department. If you read today's LA Times (AA3) you will see the real Mr. Butts cannot lead the city of Inglewood. Again my support goes to Mr. Soto a local businessman, without a doubt the best option to heal our city.

I live in a city where leadership and experience are secondary to name ID. Mr. Tabor has never ever did anything for the district, the choices for August were sad and regretful. I hope Mr. Butts runs again, at least he has a record of leadership and fixing major problems.

Sorry - there' no edit feature: Danny Tabor = Sell Out = Indecision = abstaining on a vote for a $300k annual rate for a city manager = Danny as a VERY short term mayor = lack of conviction on Danny's part = a huge loss for Inglewood

You wonder why the turnout was so low? Did our illustrious clerk Ms. Horton arrange for you to vote halfway across town like she did for me? It's truly a wonder we got more than 30-40 people to vote at all! And now it starts all over again.....Too bad we can't eradicate all of the city's management and start over again.

A record low turnout. I wonder why? Could it be the mess that the city is in thanks to our council people or former police chief. The fact is that the city is tired of these re treads. Franklin was probably the best candidate but the underhanded tactics put him out. My vote goes to the unknown dark horse Jose Soto. He reminds me of a young Obama, He has not been corrupted by the system because he has not held office. Tabor hires criminals and Dunlap makes sure her BF gets paid 700 thousand dollars to film nothing. Butts lives God knows where and protects the police. With those choices its not hard to make a decision, is it? My vote goes to the young man who lives and has always lived in Inglewood, Joseph Soto.
