Inglewood council appoints interim city manager at $25,000 a month

INGLEWOOD — The City Council has appointed Mark Weinberg, a former acting city manager here, to become interim city administrator.

Weinberg will take the reins from former acting city administrator Sheldon Curry, who replaced Tim Wanamaker.

Weinberg will work for the next six months at a salary of $25,000 a month.

The decision, a 3-0 vote, with newly-elected interim mayor Danny Tabor abstaining, was made in closed session at an Aug. 30 council meeting.

The move angered union members who are facing layoffs due to the city’s $14 million deficit.

“I just found out last night that the council have hired a new city administrator,” said Talai Smith, Chapter President of SEIU, at Tabor’s campaign celebration.

“I … am disappointed at our council because they are on the verge of laying off some folks that will have a major impact on our unit.

“To see $25,000 a month being given to Mr. Weinberg for doing a job someone could probably have done in-house, is a slap in the face for our union members, who work hard and fear not having a job tomorrow.”

Also speaking on the appointment that night, Tabor said he had every confidence in Mr. Weinberg, but with the budget crunch in mind, didn’t think it was the right time.

“I know him as a very fiscal-minded and skilled administrator and think he can do the job,” Tabor said, “but the question is can we afford him at this time when we’re looking at layoffs and scaling down the organization.”

What in the hell were these folks thinking? Yes, Mr. Weinberg is a very talented and skilled professional. He knows Inglewood inside and out! In fact, I know that he truly cares about the city. But why the hell he would even accept this sum is troubling. I say you go and hire Joseph Rouzan who is four times as skilled and would probably do the job for far less! He really knows the city, cares about its residents and is not afraid to tell the TRUTH. Vote for Joe!

Haters and Keepers I enjoyed your posts. Both are very informative and passionate. I thing your perspective is that we are upset with the person who is being hired. I am not upset with that person and most people are probably not. What we are mad at, are the incompetent leaders who hired him. It is a shame that the city is in such a mess that we have to resort to this. I don't know if we could've hired someone for 10K or 15K a month but it what is done is done. Now we have to get rid of the people who put us in this mess. I recommend a vote for Mr. Soto a 32 year old businessman who is not part of this mess.

Yes, let's not hire a real leader to at least attempt to guide this council in the right direction, so that we dare not lay off a single worker. You can't cut the fat if nobody comes in and tells you what the fat is. That report Jeff Muir presented before he went back to Culver City should have been an eye-opener to all of just how incompetent the elected leadership is. This whole argument of 'how dare he make that much per month' is stupid. Do you get mad at your doctor for making a lot of money? He went to school and worked for it. Do you get mad at your lawyer? He did the same. Maybe you should have been paying attention in school back in the day.......

The reason Inglewood is so screwed up is the absolute lack of leadership that has existed for the last 5 years. Tim Wanamaker had no clue what he was doing. He did what he was told, now there is a $17 million deficit. Half may be the economy, but not the other half. You pay for leadership. Look at the City Manager salary survey on the times. Look at the 'functional' cities and what they pay. Those guys get benefits on top of what is listed for the salaries. This guy is temporary and not getting benefits, so $25k per month is actually right in the ballpark. You get what you pay for. If we wanted to earn that money we should have gone to school for it and worked towards it our whole lives. Don't hate. Just pray this guy can help point these idiot Council persons in the right direction. They have proven without a doubt they are incapable.

Upset and unhappy camper I liked what you posted. You put facts out there like they should be put out. You will be happy to know that there is a candidate out there who has nothing to do with all this mess. He is 32 year old Joseph Soto, A business man who is different from all the other stale politicians.

I really can't believe we about to have tabor as our mayor. Im no math teacher, but $25,000 a month, we cant afford that amount, thats exactly why we are in this mess. Blinders are on and no one is looking. Why not just do a search for someone good that we could afford? Dunlap, Tabor, Franklin and Morales need to go! I might just run for mayor!!!!!

Thank you Get Real and unhappy camper. You made my point exactly. I am so tired of these so called politicians who claim to be after our best interests. This November I'm voting for Joseph Soto a young businessman who is not part of this mess. It is time to send a message to our leaders that we are tired of their incompetent leadership. Tabor by abstaining instead of voting no shows a real lack of leadership skills and does not deserve our vote.

Frustrated in District 2. Tabor is not with us. Abstaining is not voting NO! That was a cowardly, craven political vote. He's not a bystander gawking at a traffic accident. He's the MAYOR! No he didn't stand up. He won't have my vote in November.

First of all, what is really going on in a place I used to call home, $25,000 a month, if Tabor were any kind of mayor, he would have spoke up to lead his peers to do the right thing, but instead he decided to play politics and not vote, he may as well resign now, no backbone will mean note turning and looking the other way, shame shame shame on Tabor and the existing members, where is the money coming from?????

Every citizen in our city needs to flood city hall with calls voicing our complaints about paying this man 25K a month. If they don't do something about it than we need to vote against them in our next election. They represent us and if they can't do what we ask than we need to put someone in place who will do what we want. This november we should begin by voting these leaders, who can't relate to the community, out of office.

Gee, $25K per month on an annual basis is $300,000.00! The Los Angeles City Administrator gets a paultry $220,471/yr. For just nine square miles in Inglewood - that seems awfully expensive.

..how better to continue to hide the secrets - you keep rotating the same people (who had some responsibility in the demise of the city) in and out of office. I know Sheldon Currey is happy to be off the Hot Seat. Hey, Maybe Mayor Dorn will attend a council meeting to bash Weinburger....

This is the reason why our city has a 15 million dollar deficit. We should throw these councilman out of office today. The interim mayor needed to send a message out by voting no instead of abstaining. It is time to throw them all out and starts fresh. $25,000 a month! Many of our citizens don't earn that in a year. I don't know what they're thinking but come this November I am voting for the "New Candidate" Joseph Soto, a local businessman who is not part of this mess.

Really, three councilpersons felt no pain when giving this man 25,000 grand a MONTH? While laying off workers who probably make that amount in a year? I smell a recall
