Inglewood's budget crisis deepens as layoffs loom

INGLEWOOD — The City Council has approved a number of layoffs as it comes to grips with an ever growing structural budget deficit, which according to one top official has now reached $18 million.

The bleak employment and financial news was revealed Sept. 3 by Assistant City Administrator Michael Falkow, after The Wave sought clarification that the entire part-time staff in the Recreations and Parks Department — according to a source who estimates that about 102 people — would be terminated as of Sept. 30.

“That’s not accurate,” said Falkow. “[However] the council voted August 30 to direct staff to eliminate a group of part-time individuals, which was around 80 or 81 people. These are seasonal, part-time and summer workers and maybe 57 or 58 of them are from Parks and Recreations.”

He added: “If they are currently employed they will be officially notified today; if not, they will be notified by certified mail.”

The Wave sought comment from council members Judy Dunlap, Eloy Morales, Ralph Franklin and Mayor-elect Danny Tabor, but calls were not returned by press time.

Talai Smith, local Chapter President of the Service Employees International Union, who last week criticized the hiring of an interim city manager for $25,000 a month, also did not return a call.

Back in April, former Assistant City Administrator/Chief Financial Officer Jeff Muir, gave a comprehensive budget review and financial forecast that estimated the 2009-10 deficit to be approximately $13 million.

However, Falkow said that amount has grown to “about $17.5 to $18 million.”

“Clearly, the council are serious about the subject of the deficit,” he said, adding “that these reductions [layoffs] won’t get close to that.”

But when asked how quickly more job losses among both part-time and full-time staff might be coming down the line, Falkow said he was unable to speculate.

“I don’t know, that depends on your definition of the word ‘quickly,’” he said.

“Theoretically, we need to finalize the budget at the end of the month. The council have given no direction, but it’s highly likely that we will need further reductions to close the budget gap.”

Sorry Simoene, Mr. Tabor does not deserve our vote. He is a career politician who lacks leadership skills and common sense. He should've voted against hiring someone for 25 thousand a month. He abstained and showed us he lacked a backbone to stand up to the other council members. He also lacked common sense by hiring a convicted criminal as a secretary, a woman who ripped off our schools and our children. The message he sent to us law abiding citizens was that our thoughts and votes do not count. I am supporting Soto because he is not part of this mess. He reminds me of Obama, a man chosen by us because he was not part of the mess in Washington.

My vote is for Tabor, proud to have him for Mayor. Butts did do anything by himself, Soto should represent his district first. Inglewood will get better with Tabor as Mayor

I'm at a loss and still trying to figure out WHY two candidates who don't even live in the city are working so hard to become mayor. What is it about crappy little Inglewood that attracts them so much? What's the financial incentive that keeps some of these people coming back over and over again? Jasmyne....can you shed some light? Oh wait...you're working for Danny. Never mind.

Don't be the Butts, I can see your viewpoint. After all the damage in deaths and injuries that our police have caused we need someone who will not be afraid of tough decisions. There is no way he will get tough with them after all the support they have given him. Our city has paid millions because of poor training or because we have an over aggressive police force. We need to bring some reform to the police department. Butts who left our city and now returns as a carpetbagger does not deserve a chance because we need a mayor who will bring change to the police, too many people have died already. We can't afford to pay anymore multi million dollar settlements. My choice is Joseph Soto a local businessman who plans to unite us all for change.

Butts is supported 100% by police officers and police-related endorsers - if someone you know gets shot by one of our officers - do you think Buttsover will protect you and your family - or the police force. Also, we have a competent police chief - we don't need another

You need significant changes and a leader who has the courage, competence and experience to do so. Elect Jim Butts in November, you will not be disappointed.

Inglewood is about to crash and burn! Tabor couldn't lead a thirsty horse to a river. Butts has some residency issues, but it was reported that the clerk's office made a mistake, maybe that's why he one of the five running. No leader is perfect, but we need the best from the pool of candidates, my votes is for Butts this time, say what you want, but he took 3 bad situtations (Santa Monica city/Police Dept, Inglewood City and LAX) and improved them, he's the best hope for Inglewood.

The city seems to be in shambles. A 17 million dollar deficit and our politicians hire a city administrator for 25 thousand a month. Let me break down the main candidates. Tabor hires a criminal as his secretary. He also has no backbone as he decides to abstain instead of voting no for 25 K a month hire. Dunlap has her boyfriend hired for 700 thousand a year to film nothing and she does not live in the city. Check out her empty house. Mr. Butts also does not live in the city and that is why he was disqualified for the first election. The Carpet Bagger (Butts) is also afraid to reform the police. Even though they keep killing people and we keep paying. The only candidate that makes sense Is Mr Joseph Soto a 32 year old businessman who is not part of this mess. He has lived in the city his whole life and graduated from Inglewood High. He gets my vote.

All the more reason to elect James Butts in November. We need his experience in leading a city to a level of respect - as he did in Santa Monica.

What's wrong with this picture? Defeciet, lay-offs, $25,000 interim city manager. That's because in Judy Dunlap is the real mayor. She has super powers. How else is it that that the council agrees to bring back the $25,ooo man who happened to be around when the deficiet was created. It appears the lady with the super powers is a pro at at bring back those who were around before; ie Jeff Muir. Why not bring them all back and just finish us all off!!
