Los Angeles unemployment rate tops 10 percent

LOS ANGELES — The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for Los Angeles County increased to 10.5 percent in January, state officials reported Friday.

The January unemployment rate was up from a revised 9.2 percent in December, and above the 6 percent rate in January 2008, according to the Employment Development Department.

The seasonally adjusted statewide unemployment rate was 10.1 percent in January, up from 8.7 percent in December and above the 6.1 percent rate in January 2008.

The comparable estimates for the nation were 7.6 percent in January, 7.2 percent in December and 4.9 percent in January 2008.

Between December and January, total nonfarm employment declined by 86,100 jobs to reach 3.9 million in Los Angeles County. The trade, transportation and utilities sector showed the largest month-over-month decline, losing 23,600 jobs.

A total of 521,000 people were unemployed in January in Los Angeles County, which has a labor force of 4.98 million.

Statewide, nearly 1.9 million people were out of work — up from 1.6
million in December.
