Assemblyman Curren Price Jr. easily won a runoff election Tuesday to claim the state Senate seat vacated by Mark Ridley-Thomas, who stepped down to become a Los Angeles County supervisor.

Price, a Democrat, handily defeated Rabbi Nachum Schifren, a Republican,
and Peace and Freedom candidate Cindy Varela Henderson.

Price earned a spot in Tuesday's runoff by winning 35.65 percent of the vote in an eight-candidate field in a March special election, edging out fellow Democrat Assemblyman Mike Davis, who finished second with 21.78 percent of the vote.

Under state law, if no candidate receives a majority in a special election, a runoff is held between the top finishers from each political party.

Schifren finished fourth overall in the first election with 11.53 percent of the vote, while Henderson took seventh, garnering 1.75 percent.

The heavily Democratic 26th District includes Baldwin Hills, Century City, Culver City, West Los Angeles, Hollywood, Los Feliz and Leimert Park.
