Area players named to All-CIF soccer teams

Senior midfielder Edwin Chavez, who led Salesian High School to the section championship, has been named offensive player of the year in CIF-SS Division V boys soccer.


Top coaching honors also went to the Salesian trio of Mark Johnson, Moises Delgado and Jose Perez.


Besides Chavez, the All-CIF teams selected by a panel of coaches included Salesian senior forward Diego Hernandez, junior defender Jorge Ramos and junior goalkeeper Miguel Rodriguez on the first team. Mustangs on the second team were freshman forward Jose Espinoza and freshman midfielder Giovanni Reynaga.


Salesian (24-3-3) edged Baldwin Park, 2-1 in overtime in the Division V championship game, then advanced to the finals of the Southern Regional Division III playoffs where it lost to Mater Dei Catholic, 2-1.


The Division V squad also includes six players from Inglewood’s Animo Leadership Charter.


Senior midfielder Celestino Diaz, sophomore defender Francisco Espinoza and senior midfielder Andy Payeras made the first team from Animo. Senior defender Jonathan Martin and junior defender Eric Palomares are on the second unit and freshman goalkeeper Juan Cervantes is on the third.


Verbum Dei is represented by sesnior midfielder Walter Bonilla on the second team and junior midfielder Ronnie Bowden on the third.
On the Division IV team are three players from Inglewood.


They are senior forward Eduardo Bustos on the first, senior midfielder Bernardo Gonzalez on the second and senior midfielder Edgar Puentes on the third.


Co-coaches of the year on the Division II team were Orlando Brenes of Bell Gardens and Todd Heil of Santa Barbara.
The first team includes senior forward Jonathan Ramirez and junior defender Luis Ramirez of Bell Gardens and senior defender Juan Gomez of Montebello.


Bell Gardens junior goalkeeper Leonardo Martinez is on the second team. Third-teamers include the Montebello duo of junior forward Jonathan Cuellar and senior goalkeeper Mario Valdez.


El Rancho and Lynwood players are on the Division III team.


From El Rancho are junior defender Ruben Olivares (first), junior defender Dorian Puentes (second) and junior goalkeeper Luis Sanchez (third).


From Lynwood are senior defender Max Flores (second), sophomore midfielder Max Barba (third) and junior forward Adrian Robles (third).


Five Rosemead players made the Division VI squad.


First-teamers include senior goalkeeper Kevin Bustemante and senior forward Bryan Vasquez. Senior midfielder Edson Quinteros is on the second team, while senior forwards German Carrillo and Raul Lara are on the third team.
Four St. Paul players made the Division VII squad.


They include senior midfielder Adrian Montecinos and Adrian Reyes on the first team. Senior defender Jun Cho and senior forward Rory Mulcahey are on the second.
