Seven members of Cerritos College’s state championship men’s soccer team have either signed national letter of intent or committed to four-year schools.
Heading the list of signees are are All-Americans Jonathan Rivas, a Santa Fe High School graduate, and Alex Munoz, both headed to UC Irvine.
Defender Norm Mariscal, a first-team All-South Coast Conference pick, has signed with UC Riverside.
Forward Gerardo Torres and defender Miguel Vargas have committed to Division II national champion Cal State Dominguez Hills. Midfielder Ricky Reyes (Hawthorne High) has verbally committed to Cal Poly Pomona.
Goalkeeper Diego Millan (Paramount) and freshman midfielder Jhosimar Rivera have committed to Kansas Wesleyan where former Falcons Abraham Moran, Michael Padilla, Robert Carrillo and Hector Quezada currently play.
Rivas was the SCC Defender of the Year, while Munoz was named a Far West All-American after recording 10 goals and 17 assists.
Former Falcon Missael Macedo, who played in 2007 and originally committed to NAIA champion Graceland (Iowa), has signed with Division II Hawaii Hilo. Also, Jesus Ochoa of the 2007 team, has verbally committed to Kansas Wesleyan. Ochoa, who was also a kicker on the Falcon football team, had to sit out the 2008 season due to injury.
“It gives the coaching staff great pleasure to see our young men leave our program well taken care of,” Cerritos coach Benny Artiaga said. “While we will miss these individuals tremendously, knowing they are fulfilling their dreams of playing at a four-year school shows they put the work in the classroom as well as on the soccer field.
“This truly puts icing on the cake for a tremendous season to see seven of our eight sophomores and one freshman from the 2008 team leave for the next level. It shows we are serving as a positive stepping stone for our student-athletes as they pursue a degree.”
