Sprinters are setting a fast pace for Crenshaw

Crenshaw High School will be looking to parlay its strength in the sprints into a City Section boys track and field championship Thursday at Birmingham.

Sophomore DeAnthony Thomas, the top qualifier in the sprints from the prelims, leads the way for the Cougars.

The 100 meters figures to be a battle between Thomas (10.73) and Dorsey’s Robert Herron (10.76). Crenshaw also has the third and fourth qualifiers from the prelims in Gregory Ducre (10.90) and Jonathan Downard (10.94).

Thomas and Santee’s Tevin Carter turned in the top (21.74) qualifying marks in the 200. Ducre (22.01) and Herron (22.10) are again third and fourth.

Crenshaw also has the top qualifying times in the 4 by 100 (41.36) and 4 by 400 (3:22.76) relays.

Terrence Conway of Manual Arts is the top qualifier in the 400 at 49.17.

Both the 110 and 300 hurdles look to be a battle between Taft’s Dale Morgan (14.50, 38.33) and Dorsey’s Jeremy Harris (14.67, 38.87).
The leading qualifier in the shot put is Dorsey’s Khambrell Gomez (48-5 1/2).

Among the girls, Washington Prep’s Danielle Thomas is the top qualifier in the 200 in 25.37 and Washington Prep’s 4 by 100 relay team is second at 48.39.

Carson’s Alisha Belt (high jump) and Nijah Leshaw (triple) had the top qualifying marks in their events. Belt is among four who cleared 4-10. Leshaw went 34-1.

The top three in each event advance to the state championships, set for Jan. 5-6 at Buchanan High in Clovis.

Southern Section athletes will be using Friday’s Master’s Meet at Cerritos College to qualify for the state championships.
The top five finishers in each event advance.

One athlete to watch is Cathedral sprinter Randall Carroll, the national leader in the 100. He won the CIF-SS Division III title in 10.39.
He turned in the fastest time in the state and third fastest in the nation this year in winning the 200 in 20.93, then anchored the 4 by 100 relay team to victory.

Serra’s Robert Woods came from behind to win the Division IV 200 in 21.43 and qualify for the Master’s. Woods won the 400 in 47.31, the third best mark in the state, then anchored the Cavaliers’ winning 4 by 100 relay team in 41.21.

Kivon Grant of Dominguez improved his personal best to 48.06 in the 400 by placing third in Division I.

Serra’s Van Alexander won the Division IV 110 hurdles in 15.16.

Serra won the Division IV boys team title and Cathedral was second to Notre Dame in Division III.

Turquoise Thompson helped the Serra girls win the Division IV team title by taking first in the 400 (54.07), 300 hurdles (41.61) and 4 by 400 relay (3:48.37). She also ran on the 4 by 100 relay team that placed second. The UCLA-bound Thompson is ranked second in the nation in the 300 hurdles.

St. Mary’s Academy finished second to Serra in the team standings.
