Oxnard’s Victor Ortiz is seen by many as the natural successor to the recently-retired Oscar De La Hoya.

But the 22-year-old slugger seemed to chafe at that suggestion during the news conference announcing his WBA interim world super lightweight title bout with Argentina’s Marcos Maidana June 27 at Staples Center.

“I am Victor Ortiz, not Oscar De La Hoya,” Ortiz said in response to a question. “I am not thinking past this fight.”

The bout, to be aired live by HBO Boxing After Dark, features Ortiz, who is 24-1 with 19 knockouts.

Maidana is 25-1 with 24 KOs.

In another bout on the card, WBA featherweight champion Chris John of Indonesia defends his title in a rematch against top-ranked Rocky Juarez of Houston.
