UCLA spent all week at practice focusing on stopping Stanford’s Toby Gerhart.
It went for naught.

The senior tailback ran for three touchdowns and 134 yards on 29 carries to lead the Cardinal past the Bruins, 24-16 in the Pac-10 game.

Quarterback Andrew Luck added 198 yards passing as Stanford (4-1, 3-0) snapped a five-game losing streak to UCLA.

Gerhart had scoring runs of five, 10 and one yards and also caught two passes for 24 yards. Luck, a redshirt freshman, completed 14 of his first 17 passes before incompletions on his final three attempts.

UCLA (3-1, 0-1) scored first when Kai Forbath kicked a 29-yard field goal with 8:51 left in the opening quarter.

But Gerhart then capped two first-half scoring drives to give Stanford a 14-3 lead. Forbath’s 34-yard field goal on the final play of the half accounted for the remaining Bruin points of the first 30 minutes.

Tailback Johnathan Franklin, the redshirt freshman from Dorsey High School, scored on a one-yard run early in the fourth period and Forbath added his third field goal, a 35-yarder, with 4:16 left.

Bruin quarterback Kevin Craft completed 22 of 34 passes for 204 yards to go along with a running game that netted 95 yards. Franklin carried 14 times for 58 yards.
