Crenshaw High School is clearly the class of the City Section when it comes to football this year.

The Coliseum League just might be at the head of the class when it comes to ranking leagues. At least it has the most teams still alive in the upper division.

To nobody’s surprise, the top-seeded Cougars had little difficulty with their first-round opponent, rolling to a 42-6 victory over Birmingham Thursday in the Division I playoffs.

Dorsey and Locke, the league’s other Division I qualifiers, also advanced.

No. 12 Dorsey rolled to a 33-17 victory at San Pedro, and No. 7 Locke topped Banning, 24-14 in contests that pitted teams from the Coliseum and Marine leagues. The Marine League was considered the No. 1 league in the section at the seeding meeting, the Coliseum No. 2.

But heading into Wednesday’s quarterfinals, the Coliseum League has three survivors, the Marine and Western leagues two each.

Crenshaw (11-0) hosts Westchester (8-3), Dorsey (8-3) is at No. 4 Taft (7-4) and Locke (7-4) is at No. 2 Carson (9-2) in the quarters. The other matchup has No. 11 Narbonne (6-5) at No. 3 Venice (10-1).

Crenshaw was in total control after Gregory Ducre returned an interception 20 yards on the first play from scrimmage.

Geoffrey Norwood’s five-yard run at the 9:11 mark of the first quarter started the Cougars off on a run that propelled them to a 35-0 lead by halftime.

Qujuan Floyd scored on a 10-yard pass from Marquis Thompson to make it 14-0 and Geno Hall returned a punt 37 yards for a touchdown 25 seconds into the second period.

Hall scored again when he picked up a teammate’s fumble and ran it in from four yards out.

DeAnthony Thomas (nine carries, 106 yards) scored on a six-yard run with 26 seconds left in the first half.

Norwood’s 13-yard run completed the scoring for Crenshaw, which substituted freely in the second half.

Birmingham (3-8) cracked the scoreboard with 3:01 left on a four-yard pass from Maxwell Smith to Dominique Brown.

Dorsey 33, San Pedro 17
Joseph Gray completed 13 of 25 passes for 298 yards and two TDs and ran 40 yards for a score to lead the visiting Dons to the first-round win.

Robert Herron (three catches for 125 yards) and Marvin Hall (six for 106) caught 63- and 61-yard scoring passes from Gray. Jorrian Washington scored on a 13-yard run.

Dorsey’s defense forced four turnovers, three on interceptions. The last pick was returned 85 yards for a score by Jabri Proby as time expired.

Locke 24, Banning 14
Omar Herrera was 20 of 33 for 285 yards and two scores as Locke topped Banning in another Division I opener.

Herrera’s 14-yard scoring pass to Kiliyeon Cooper and 29-yarder to Daguan Harvey got the Saints out to a 14-0 lead.

Treveon Harris caught nine passes for 131 yards and Eric Boyd had six for 71 for Locke, which finished third in the Coliseum League.

Carson 49, Santee 0
Second-seeded Carson raced to a 30-0 lead by halftime and never looked back against the runner-up from the Southern League.

Justin Alo was 6 of 11 for 195 yards and three TDs and ran for a score to lead the Marine League champion Colts to the first-round win. Alo had a 30-yard scoring pass to Dion Willis, who also ran for a pair of TDs.

Myles Johnson scored on a 47-yard run and 75-yard reception.

A scary situation developed with 10:38 left when Santee star receiver Tevin Carter suffered an apparent head injury after being tackled. He got up, then collapsed and remained motionless for about 20 minutes. He was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure after complaining of neck pain. The officials ended the game at that point.

Division II
Jefferson, the Coliseum League’s fourth entry in the playoffs, was routed by Northern League champion Franklin, 57-12 in a Division II opener.

Franklin (9-1), the No. 5 seed, is at No. 4 Hamilton (8-3) Wednesday in the quarters. Hamilton routed Wilson, 63-20.

In other Division II games, No. 1 Roosevelt edged Grant, 14-10, Fairfax blanked Bell, 27-0, No. 3 El Camino Real defeated Panorama, 42-21, Poly topped South East, 21-17, Cleveland defeated Marshall, 25-20 and No. 2 Arleta routed Reseda, 48-15.

8-Man
No. 1 View Park (11-0) blasted Community Harvest, 56-8 in the first round of the 8-man playoffs.

Annenberg (9-2) defeated Douglass, 36-22, Animo Robinson (10-1) crushed SOCES, 68-22 and Fulton routed New Design, 76-44 in other openers.

Wednesday’s semifinal matchups have Annenberg at View Park and Animo Robinson at Fulton.
