Montebello High School, Michael Carabes in particular, took the long-distance approach in Tuesday’s Almont League boys basketball game.

Carabes scored 30 points, going 7-of-9 from 3-point range, to lead the first-place Oilers to an 83-64 victory over Bell Gardens. They were 9-of-17 as a team from beyond the arc.

The Oilers, 22-1 overall and 5-0 in league, raced to leads of 21-6 after one quarter and 45-24 by halftime.

Carabes, who also had five assists, was the main contributor, but there were others for Montebello.

Andrew Torres scored 15 points and Daniel Flores had nine points, seven assists and six rebounds.

Bell Gardens slipped to 4-18 overall, 3-2 in league.

Keppel 73, Alhambra 36
The Aztecs (17-4, 4-1) remained a game back in the standings with a 73-36 rout of Alhambra (3-18, 0-5).

Keppel raced to a 32-5 lead after one quarter and was up 44-12 at halftime.

Schurr 72, San Gabriel 54
Schurr (6-12, 2-3) defeated San Gabriel, 72-54 in the other Almont game Tuesday. The Matadors fell to 12-9, 1-4.

Camino Real League
Cantwell 50, St. Monica 46
Cantwell Sacred Heart withstood a furious fourth-quarter rally by St. Monica Tuesday to win, 50-46 in a Camino Real League girls basketball game.

The Cardinals, ranked No. 6 in this week’s CIF Southern Section Division 5-AA poll, improved to 15-6 overall and 3-1 in league. They are tied for first with St. Bernard (11-13, 3-1), ranked No. 1 in Division 6-AA.

Cantwell held a 13-point lead that shriveled to two points with a minute to play.

Priscilla  Rodriguez scored 15 points and Valerie Carrasco had 10 to lead Cantwell. Jordan Santiago added nine points and seven rebounds.

Almont League
Alhambra 66, Keppel 64
Keppel’s 87-game league winning streak that spanned eight seasons has come to an end.

Alhambra did the honors Tuesday when Gabi Rogers hit a jumper with 14 seconds left for a 66-64 victory that gave the Moors (16-4, 5-0) first place to themselves. Keppel, 9-12, 4-1, dropped to second.

Keppel had tied the score on a 3-pointer with 24 seconds left by Camaryn Amimoto. The Aztecs had a couple of opportunities following Rogers’ basket, but were unable to convert.

Alhambra, trailing by 11 points in the first half, turned the game around with a 20-7 third quarter.

Vera Machado scored 22 points and Jen Imaa had 20 to pace the Moors.

Alyson Lock led Keppel with 22 points.

Schurr 57, San Gabriel 20
Schurr (10-10, 3-2) coasted to a 37-point victory over San Gabriel (2-16, 0-5) in the other Almont game.
