Sam Sullivan fondly refers to his Fremont High School boys basketball team as a group of overachievers.
One of the smaller teams he’s fielded in his 30-plus years as coach has achieved quite a lot during a season rapidly approaching an end.
With the City Section playoffs just a couple of weeks away, the Pathfinders are 16-5 overall and 7-1 in the Coliseum League. They trail only Crenshaw in the standings.
Their 75-35 rout of visiting Jefferson Monday set the stage for more challenging games later in the week at Dorsey (Wednesday) and at home against View Park Prep (Friday).
The best thing about Monday’s game was it gave Sullivan the opportunity to play his bench extensively in a contest that was largely over at halftime when they led, 39-19.
“In a game like this, you don’t want guys to get hurt,” he said. “We know Dorsey is not going to be easy. We wanted the other guys to get out there. It was a reward for playing hard.”
Michael Sullivan, his son, led the way with 21 points and 12 rebounds and Kaylen Ayers added 12 points and nine rebounds. Sullivan, at 6-foot-3, and Ayers, at 6-2, are the tallest starters, yet they outrebounded Jefferson, 55-23.
Because of the size factor, outside shooting is a big factor in most games for Fremont.
Although they didn’t have to rely on him much Monday, guard Savion Udeh is normally the Pathfinder’s most important offensive weapon. He averages 16.6 points per game and was coming off a 28-point performance Friday against Manual Arts. He had six points on two 3-point shots against Jefferson.
“Savion is a great outside shooter who sets the tempo for us,” Sullivan said. “He’s got to be in double figures for us. When he’s hitting, teams have to extend their defenses.”
Junior guard Francisco Delgado led Jefferson (3-11, 0-7) with 18 points and four assists. Three of his seven field goals were 3-pointers.
Eddie Cervantes had seven points and Rayvon Jackson six for the Democrats.
In other Coliseum League action Monday, Crenshaw (14-3, 7-0) routed View Park Prep, 91-42.
