While Crenshaw High School was sailing along as usual, Dorsey was tightening things up Wednesday in the battle for second place in the Coliseum League boys basketball race.
Crenshaw (15-3, 8-0) maintained a two-game lead in the loss column with a 108-26 rout of Manual Arts (2-11, 1-7). The Cougars are averaging 94 points per game in league and have exceeded 100 points on three occasions.
Dorsey (11-10, 6-2) is now a half-game back of Fremont (16-6, 7-2) for the second spot after knocking off the Pathfinders, 59-47 Wednesday.
The Dons, who gave Crenshaw a close game earlier in the season, are idle Friday. Crenshaw hosts Locke and Fremont hosts View Park.
Locke (10-16, 5-4) defeated View Park, 57-53 in the other league game Wednesday. View Park is 10-15, 2-7.
Eastern League
Bell 67, South East 43
Charlie Diaz and Mychael Deas scored 19 points each and combined to hit eight 3-point shots to help Bell (10-10, 5-4) defeat South East, 67-43 in the Eastern League.
Jonathan Cortez added 12 points for the Eagles, who jumped out to a 20-9 lead after the first quarter and were never challenged.
South East is 9-10, 3-5.
Jordan 70, South Gate 42
League-leading Jordan (15-9, 9-0) rolled to a 70-42 victory over South Gate in the Eastern League.
Marine League
Gardena 87, San Pedro 82
Matt Morris scored 36 points to lead Gardena to a come-from-behind victory over San Pedro in the Marine League. Gardena (14-7, 5-3), which trailed by 10 after one quarter, outscored San Pedro, 56-29 over the next two periods.
Christian Frankling added 18 points for Gardena.
Washington Prep 73, Carson 54
Washington Prep (14-7, 7-1) maintained its share of the Marine League lead with a 73-54 win over Carson (6-14, 3-5). The Generals are tied with Narbonne for the top spot.
Michaelyn Scott had 17 points, seven steals and six assists to lead the way for Washington. Victor Robbins scored 25 points for Carson.
Northern League
Franklin 70, Marshall 46
Zeve Sanderson had 19 points and 11 rebounds as Franklin (14-8, 7-0) posted a 70-46 Northern League victory over Marshall (8-10, 4-3).
Cesar Hernandez (12) and Anthony Quiroz (10) also scored in double figures for the Panthers.
Ocean League
Morningside 55, Culver City 42
Jayvon Bland finished had 11 points and four steals and Chris Johnson added 11 points and 13 rebounds to lead Morningside (13-11, 2-5) to the Ocean League win.
Hawthorne 60, Beverly Hills 57
A.J. Brevard had 24 points and five assists and Miles Green had 13 points, 12 rebounds, 12 steals and 11 assists for Hawthorne (10-14, 3-4).
Santa Monica 75, Inglewood 53
Julius Bilbrew collected 19 points and seven rebounds as Inglewood (14-8, 5-2) fell to Santa Monica. Gerald Evans added 12 points for the Sentinels.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Marine League
Carson 65, Washington Prep 42
Janitha Iamaleava had 27 points and 18 rebounds to help Carson top Washington Prep, 65-42 and pull into a tie for first place in the Marine League.
Chante Miles had 11 points, seven assists and seven steals and Annie Currie added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Colts (16-7, 8-1), who now share the lead with Washington (17-10, 8-1).
Reshanda Gray had 15 points, 13 rebounds and four blocked shots to lead the Generals. Kiana Furlow added 10 points and 13 rebounds.
Coliseum League
View Park Prep 78, Locke 21
Danielle Pruitt had 15 points in View Park Prep’s rout of Locke in Coliseum League play. Cristal Jeff and Angel Smith each scored 14 points for View Park (21-5, 9-0).
Fremont 62, Dorsey 49
Fremont (10-9, 3-6) topped Dorsey (15-11, 5-4) in the Coliseum League.
Eastern League
South East 41, Bell 27
South East (19-7, 7-1) outscored Bell, 17-0 in the first half and cruised to the Eastern League victory.
Cynthia Cu scored 10 points to lead the way for the Jaguars. Portia Tapscott and Cristina Villanueva each had eight. Villanueva also had 12 rebounds.
Ocean League
Santa Monica 47, Inglewood 42
Santa Monica continued its mastery of Inglewood Wednesday by defeating the Sentinels, 47-42 in an Ocean League game.
Santa Monica (17-6, 7-0) has handed Inglewood (19-5, 5-2) its only two losses in league.
Hazel Ramirez scored 12 points and Janelle Ross added 11 points and eight rebounds to lead Inglewood. DeAjanae Scurry had 15 rebounds.
