Downey High School, already eliminated from title contention, has been relegated to the spoiler’s role.
The Vikings played it perfectly Tuesday, ruining Lynwood’s shot at the San Gabriel Valley League boys crown.
Thanks to David Rivera’s five free throws in the final minute of overtime, Downey (12-13, 5-4) defeated the Knights, 68-63. Rivera finished with 15 points.
Tyler Ellis paced Downey with 16 points.
The Vikings host Warren Thursday in the regular-season finale.
Lynwood (17-9, 6-3) is at Dominguez Friday.
Gahr 67, Warren 46
Charles Nebo Jr. had 19 points, 11 rebounds, three blocked shots and three assists as SGVL co-leader Gahr topped Warren, 67-46.
Anthony Martinez had 15 points and Davon Potts added 14 for the Gladiators, who led, 19-5 after one quarter and 37-15 at halftime.
Warren takes marks of 11-15 and 1-8 into the Downey game.
Paramount 84, Dominguez 62
Paramount (18-8, 7-2), which shares the lead with Gahr, pounded Dominguez, 84-62 in the other SGVL contest Tuesday.
Rashad Parker scored 25 points and A.J. Maldonado added 20 to pace the Pirates. Kevin Guthrie finished with 11 points.
Anthony Scott led Dominguez (5-17, 1-8) with 32 points.
Suburban League
Norwalk 66, Artesia 54
Anthony Holliday scored a career-high 33 points to lead Norwalk past Artesia in the Suburban League.
Holliday, who also had eight rebounds, was 5-of-8 on 3-point shots and 14-of-17 from the foul line. He is averaging 18.4 points per game for the Lancers (15-11, 8-3), who are tied for second with Cerritos (17-9, 8-3).
Manuel Castaneda added 16 points and eight rebounds as Norwalk raced to a 40-24 halftime lead and never looked back.
Artesia is 10-14, 5-6.
Del Rio League
Whittier 62, Pioneer 52
Gary Matthews scored 19 points as Whittier topped Pioneer, 62-52 in the Del Rio League Friday.
The Cardinals (13-10, 6-2) share the lead with La Serna (14-11, 6-2).
GIRLS BASKETBALL
San Gabriel Valley League
Lynwood 77, Downey 52
Lynwood clinched the San Gabriel Valley League title outright Tuesday with a 77-52 victory at Downey.
The Knights (18-6, 9-0) outscored Downey, 29-16 in the second quarter to build a 45-30 lead by the break. They went on a 19-9 run over the final eight minutes to complete the rout.
Katie Marifian kept the Vikings (11-14, 5-4) in it for a while with 20 points (3-of-7 on 3-pointers), six assists and five steals. Irma Urzua added 13 points and Demetria Love had nine points and 11 rebounds.
Warren 53, Gahr 29
Frances Vaaulu had 13 points, 13 rebounds and four blocked shots as second-place Warren (21-5, 7-2) routed Gahr, 53-29. The Bears were ahead, 20-5 after one quarter.
Justene Reyes (nine points, eight rebounds), Tahja Matthews (eight points) and Danielle Rodriguez (six points, eight assists, five rebounds) also helped Warren.
Symone Brown led Gahr (14-11, 4-5) with 11 points and six rebounds.
Del Rio League
Santa Fe 56, La Serna 45
Santa Fe (17-8, 7-1), the Del Rio co-leader with Whittier, topped La Serna, 56-45 Friday as Klarissa Ayala had 12 points to lead the way. Tera Salhus added 10 points and 10 rebounds and Jessica Romero had 10 points for the Chiefs.
